question

The mother says Hubert wrote a letter in eneglish to Leonardo when Titanic came out...that was 12 years ago, and Hubert was what, 4 or 5 years old then. Can such a small kid really write a letter in a foreign language?

reply

When I was a kid, I wrote to Sharon Stone in french... and received an answer. :)

reply

Ur dumb. He could have watched it any time in those 12 years since it came out, and written him a letter when he was 7 or 8 or 9, Leonardo is still alive so it could have been anytime. Besides french-canadians often speak both french and english, so it's not a foreign language.

reply

Yeah, I'd assume it was later, but the mother said when it came out(at least that's how it was subtitled), so I just found it weird

reply

Well he is obviously an individual with a lot of skills, so maybe he wrote it when he was five? I learned to read at 4...
Sorry for calling you dumb, I am so arrogant sometimes.
It's weird, that film was like a biography of my relationship to my own mother in my teen years, it's crazy how he just made this perfect outstanding movie that everybody can relate to and that's just thrilling and a little painful, because it puts you put face to face with the situation again, especially because I love my mother now and we're great friends, and still that period when I hated her so much I could burst, but no one understodd me, those times are still so real, and it reminds me so exactly of it was... It's a mentally violent experience.

reply

That's OK, for Imdb standards, u're on the polite side:)
I figured that he could read and write, a lot of people do before they enter school, I just thought the 'foreign language' was a bit extra-talented of him:)But of course I forgot that he's canadian, I don't know how that happened:)It was pretty dumb indeed:)
I loved the movie too, I think it was very well made. It's not exactly my personal experience, but I can see it being under different circumstances. He captures the essence of being a teenager well.He made it very relatable, and funny and stirring at the same time. He's definitely talented.

What I think is really great about the movie too, that's not in the script, is that you notice his personality, his youth and his vulnerability: through the movie, that is ENTIRELY made by him, script, direction, photo, acting the main part, you can see that he is a little bit vain, a little bit proud of his artistic thoughts, proud to be gay, and a bit bitter towards homophobics (he gets beaten up)... All those small details that give a picture of him as a person beneath the acting, the person he really is, and in addition to that the story is based on reality, this just gives it a tiny bit of... not amateurism, but a touching signature of a 19 year old boy who is still a teenager and cannot get along with his mother, besides the prestige and genious of the film, that sort of makes this boy human and the movie so honest and touching, besides of course him being a genious film-maker and amazing artist.

It wouldn't be that weird since most people from Quebec (I don't know if you are from there)speak perfect english. In Montreal, there is a part of the town which doesn't speak french. And lots of tv chanels are in english only. People from Quebec are mostly bilingual

reply

I wouldn't agree to say that "people from Quebec are mostly bilingual", when you get out of the greater Montreal the great majority of people barely speak English and a lot of them are adverted to it.

Coming back to the film, I think you need to consider that Xavier Dolan was 8 or 9 when Titanic came out, and since Hubert's character is basically himself and since the first version of the screenplay was written a couple of years ago, when Xavier Dolan was the age Hubert is in the film or so, then it can make sense for an 8 year old to write a letter to Leo. And the letter could've been in French, or translated by his mother, or in very butchered English, that's not mentioned.

reply

I believe he wrote it when he was a little bit older and yes it was in English! It's actually out there somewhere on the internet. Very sweet haha!
