F1 died with Senna.

I'm quoting someone else here whom I completely agree with.
This sport was finished that tragic day.
It's been a fixed, soulless snoozefest since.

Just remembering a shitty day 25 years ago.

Kind of ironic that Senna's death was a product of all the things that people claim made F1 great and by their absence thereafter means F1 sucks.

reply

It kinda is, but I'm not sure his death was directly a product of that, they just had different rules.
Something happened that day that had nothing to do with safety rules or other stuff.
It was really an accident, I don't think it depended on anything other than very bad luck.

But yes it's true, that moment changed so many things that made great F1, making it awful (it's like the "liquid on a plane" bs: nothing has really happened relating to liquids, but it's a possibility so they decided, because of totally different situations (9/11), that they needed different rules, so now flying sucks).

They changed the course and other courses like it after that weekend. (Changes which would have prevented a car skating off a bend over gravel at top speed into a concrete wall in the first place ) And it set into motion the safety changes to cars which have brought us head height cockpit walls (which would have prevented Senna's death) and the halo.

Two of the things which people complain ruin F1.

Air travel hasn't died nor does it really suck just because people are restricted in bringing containers of liquid in their carry on.

F1 has always suffered from the fact that there is always one car that is superior to the rest. Sometimes the gap is big, sometimes the gap is small and seasons can be competitive. In the years, Schumacher won for like 5 years straight the gap was huge with Ferrari having the best car, then the late 2000s, early 2010s it was Redbull. Now it seems Mercedes have the best car. If they all used the same car it would be way more interesting to see who the actual best and fastest driver is.

reply

The actual best and fastest is Ayrton Senna.
But I agree, the car has always been a huge factor. Nowadays, it's the only factor.
