man walking backwards

Can anyone explain the scene where Ezri and Aaron sit silently in the street and a man in front of them appears to be walking forwards and then backwards again and again?

I think that this man represents the repetitiveness of the ultra ortodox jewish society that both men are living in! Everthing is arranged for them from the moment they wake up untill go to sleep, i.c. what to eat, and not to eat, what to drink and not to drink, what to think and what not to think, what to read and not to read, when and how to have sex and not to have sex,... from the craddle to the grave! There is no room for personal freedom and own initiave. Aaron says good in the movie that God has created a beautiful world to live and enjoy, he is not, he feels dead untill Ezri appeares in his life! Monotony in short!

YES!!! I wondered the same!! I didn't understand that scene!!! It was probably a punishment or something like that... but NOW I don't really know it yet!!! It's not clear in the film.

I must have been looking away at the time this scene was on my tv screen. I went back and looked at it though and i think it's the same man from another scene who reads the posters on the street to himself and who Rivkah pulls her son away from because he's acting weirdly. As a side note, it may not be apparent to folks with no connection to jewish custom, but in that scene (where Rivkah pull's her son away from the man), the man has the child blessing him instead of the other way around. This is not normal that a child would bless an adult in jewish custom.

From this I gather that the man is clearly a little deranged and within the context of the film, I think he might symbolise someone who has gone crazy because he could not deal with his feelings.

It certainly wasn't a punishment or anything like that.

Remarkable film.
