I don't get the beginning

Sorry, but I don't get the beginning.

Why is he smashing the padlock of the butcher shop with a stone? Why is he throwing away all the bad meat?

I do understand that his father was the owner of the shop and died ... nonetheless I don't get the meaning behind the beginning.

Hasn't he been in contact with his father (so he wouldn't own a key to the shop)?

I assumed that he had been busy with the funeral and all the memorial tradition that goes with a Jewish death (isn't there like 7 days worth of sitting Shiva where you can't go to work or leave the house?) That explains the meat.
Maybe the dad was super strict and carried the only key.

reply

Ah, that would make sense, of course.

Thanks for the explanation! :)

It's exactly 7 days of sitting Shiva (this word actually means 'seven' in Hebrew).
