If you can understand the Hebrew, then you'll see the acting is fairly poor. At the least then should have tries to imitate the accent spoken in Mea Shearim. The actors all sound like they're from North Tel Aviv (which they probably are). I'm surprised this movie has done so well, but I guess speaking a foreign language and adding subtitles automatically makes it seem exotic to most people.
shareI know nothing about Hebrew, but I felt the acting was utterly convincing, just through the physical nuances alone. I found the whole portrayal of the relationships completely believable, to the point where I came away from it wanting to cry (and I never cry!).
Maybe the accents were off, but to be honest that's probably the least important facet to the film.
I don't understand Hebrew either, but I thought the acting is very convincing and I was impressed how much they can "say" with not so many words - they are speaking with the eyes or with a gesture and this is enough and this is IMO great acting, no matter if their accent is from Tel-Aviv or Mea Shearim.
shareI think my point is, acting is more than moving your body and someone else reading subtitles. Heck, even I can do that! They should have at least tried to be convincing that they were haredim from Mea Shearim. And they weren't (at least not to someone who speaks Hebrew).
shareMaybe they don't have the right accent, but as you can see by the international recognition, the acting is more than just the accent. Their body language, facial expression and looks everyone understands, no matter where they live and what language they speak. It's exactly the opposite of 'exotic' that you mentioned. Love, fascination, affection is familiar to anyone, also the constrictions of the society, even if they're different in every country/culture.
The accent is lost on those who don't speak Hebrew but the film doesn't lose anything because of this. The accent is not the focal point of this film, nor is Mea Shearim.

Darian's point is that - apart from those who don't speak Hebrew - the accent is wrong. Of course, most people who will watch this won't speak Hebrew. But that doesn't excuse a basic error which will be picked up by the people this film depicts.
For those of us who are ignorant of Hebrew accents, the acting appears to be good.
We've all seen movies where various English accents are wrong or badly performed and I have to say it can ruin things for me as an English speaker.
I say his point is valid.

I know Hebrew and I noticed that apart from when they're praying, their accents are "wrong". But it didn't detract for me. I thought it was well acted.

Who cares what they speak the fact is that two people in love can not live their lifes as the wish due to the pressure of an ultra ortodox society they live in! So the movie has an univeral message of freedom and tollerance and that is what matters which they brilliantly!

From my point of view the acting is great, I have watched this film many times, I like it very much!!! the actors did a great job, how they look at each other is great.. I think the young actor (Ran Danker) do live in Tel Aviv, you are great picking up accents ;) by the way, This actor is quite famous in Israel, isn't he? In my country, I feel the same when actors try to imitate the accent from my local area, they do not do a perfect job but they are still great actors!!! it's true that the accent is quite important too!
