Pretentious

Advertised as a "thriller" there was nothing thrilling about this film at all. If people think that DeNiro was doing great acting when he was shouting and swearing at Norton to go or stay in the office ...I think you have become blinded by his alleged greatness. Seriously, that was "great" acting? Norton was irritating with that rasping accent - might be "authentic" but at times he was hard to understand. And why did Madlyn finally leave her husband and do it by burning the house down? Was he being cruel, abusive to her, what? She was just as dull in the marriage as he was. He liked to watch sport on TV, so many men do, but that means her soul was kept in a dungeon????

By calling the film a thriller, when Norton found religion, I thought he was going to turn him into a calculating, evil psychopath like the film where he was the schizophrenic manipulating his defence lawyer (the title escapes me at the moment). Was Milla Jovovich under her husband's direction to seduce DeNiro or did she just seduce him for her own lust? And that stupid, little girl lost voice - was she stupid or calculating?

Norton rings the radio station to talk about his philosophy and the presenter obviously thinks he's talking rubbish so gets him off with "thank you for your views" but Norton believes his view of God so why doesn't the presenter debate with him?

I'm afraid I didn't get the film - actually, I don't think there is anything to get. I don't mind films that are slow and don't lead anywhere if the script is good and the acting is good but neither was the case here. I think everyone involved were trying too hard to do a meaningful, thought provoking film but the only thought it provoked in us at the end of the film was "what???????".

I totally didn't get it. I didn't really think of it as a "thriller" either.

"You have my soul in a dungeon." That line sounded kind of melodramatic to me. Made me think at first that he had forbidden her to leave the house, or kept her confined somehow and abused her, but that wasn't the case.

There might be something more to it, but I don't care to watch it again.

Seems to me like some scenes and plot points were cut from the finished film.
