Why Edward Norton?

I don't understand why he was picked to play this role. His cute little face and voice with those corn rows was so funny I couldn't take his character seriously.

I agree, I hate the cornrows!
I think the choice for him to play this convicted arsonist, was based on playing to the sympathies of the audience. They wanted you to believe through the beginning of the movie, that he didn't belong in jail.

I rewound and watched it twice. There's no mention of it, but she asks him, ""o you feel anything, maybe a tingling, it's not dramatic, but you should feel something?"
So did she give him ecstacy, or mushrooms, or what? And he wasn't freaking out, so he must have known. I just thought that was very strange.

He was trying on the magnetic insoles and she wanted him to think he felt something from wearing them. This was the ruse she used to get him to her house.
