I hate it when movies are mis-marketed!

The trailer made it look like a comedy. Although there were funny moments (Dustin Hoffman especially lightened the film), this movie is ***NOT*** a comedy. I don't mind seeing sad movies, but I don't want to start one thinking it's a comedy and then have it turn unrelentingly sad and depressing. It's like the film made an abrupt left turn at the halfway point, when he got together with Miriam.
Giamatti was terrific as always, but I agree with posters who say many of the actors in this film seem to be acting in completely different movies. Minnie Driver's performance didn't fit in at all. Miriam was dull and unbelievable. First wife a cliche. Just not very well written or directed, IMHO.

... unrelentingly sad and depressing ...
IMO, predictably so.🐭

I knew nothing at all about it before I watched it on TV. It was charming to start with, and did get me hooked. But yes, quite depressing towards the end. I usually avoid this type of movie like the plague. Not sure if I'm glad I watched it or not.

I choose to believe what I was programmed to believe
