I love Michael Haneke, and I see a lot of him in this film. I've heard of Brillante Mendoza (i'm Filipino) but i never got around to seeing his films. With his upcoming film starring Isabelle Huppert, I'm thinking that he really does have a lot of influence from Haneke. Anyone else notice this? If so, are his other films similiar, do they also have Haneke influence?
shareI don't know what directors influenced Brillante Mendoza, but I didn't see any Haneke influences in the two Mendoza films I've seen so far (Kinatay and Lola).
I was strongly reminded of Hector Babenco (Pixote), and a bit of Cidade De Deus.
City slums and slummy police corruption, with a bit of horror on the margins, but no "tricks" à la Haneke.
I didn't see Haneke in this, more like Taxi Driver, in the street depiction.
