Worst movie

Hello

I was watching this film at the cannes premiere.
After an hour me and my friend, walked out, like so many other people did.
very very bad movie.
Some of my other friends stayed to the end. we all agreed that its one of the worst movie ever made.
Even if the story have been told in 5 minutes it would stil be to long and boring.
Many of the scenes are so dark, you cant see whats going on. And the microphone (boom) can be seen often.

Whe folk walk out of the cinema, I take that as a weakness on their part, shame on you!

I really wanto to see this movie even more now.

Thanks for encouraging me.

reply

this film has no point... meaningless.

reply

I was also at the premiere of this at Cannes and i loved it. Ok this wont be for everyone, but i found it fresh and exciting.

reply

...and the best director goes to:

Brilliante Mendoza!

so suck it! :)

reply

But where do you draw the line?
Let's hypothesize that the last 45 minutes presented a black screen.
All the same sounds and dialog, but no picture.

Would you still consider it a good film?
After all, it would still be very different, and a brave choice, right?

reply

Is that what you consider film theory?
What childish nonsense.

reply

If you get Cannes tix next year, give them to me. They shouldn't be wasted on people who can't sit through an entire movie. From what I have read about this film, it is an original, uncompromising vision - exactly what you should expect at Cannes. The last line of your post doesn't make any sense to me. I can't imagine they'd award Best Director to someone who can't light a scene or keep the boom out of his shots.

reply

this is the first movie i ever walked out of in a cinema.
i hate when people does it. but i couldnt watch this *beep*

The film was uniformly despised at Cannes, despite it's BD win. I mean, how is the movie being challenging by showing the gruesome murder, decapitation, vivisection, etc of a prostitute? Apparently nothing much happens in the film other than that. Yes, it's realistic, but what's the point? Seriously, how is this movie any different than a snuff film? And I've watched plenty of depressing movies, and I like realism in movies, but Ebert even wrote in his blog that it wasn't so much the subject of the film, but the directorial style that was bad.

reply

Yes, it's realistic, but what's the point?

I don't know about that. The director keeps saying that "this thing happens" when I can't even recall an incident in the last 20 years at our country where a bunch of cops mutilated a prostitute, much less to that degree.

reply

A few years ago, the police and military murdered journalists and those who opposed GMA. Of course all of those were meant to be "hidden", but oh well.

This is not meant to be directed to you Saint, but I find it fascinating that a micro indie like this wins an award at Cannes while those sent to compete at the Academy Awards (like Rizal or the much hyped Ploning) gets nowhere.

Not really. That's typical "influential entity vs. xx" -- which exists on any other country.

I'm referring to cops mutilating random passersby for little to no reason. Sure there are thrill-seeking cops but it's not common -- and not in the same magnitude as this.

reply

For no reason?
I take it you didn't actually see the film, and have no idea what it's about, then.
And yeah, I'm sure you're so much more an expert.

reply

Yes, it seemed as if everyone hated it, but the same ones hated 'Serbis' last year, and while 'Serbis' is probably slightly superior, I still found much, infinitely much, to enjoy in 'Kinatay' which was as hypnotic, as scary, as subdued and as fascinating, although probably simpler to gauge thematically. 'Tirador' (Slingshot), to me, remains his masterpiece, though. I can't believe that it is not out on DVD.

And the gore parts of 'Kinatay' aren't actually all that gory. Cannes had plenty of stuff this year that was as or more graphic than that.

Congratulations, Mr Mendoza, with the prize in Cannes.

It wasn't universally despised you utter nincompoop.
Sure, it split some audiences. That's rather different than 'universally despised', kiddo.
Just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean the world shares your tastes.
Grow up.

reply

I read that Roger Ebert claimed this was the worst movie in Cannes history!

And if people walked out - how could the jury give Mendoza Best Director???

I recall his last film at Cannes "Serbis" was also canned by the critics.

I no longer walk out of films because I feel bad later for wasting my money and sometimes films get better later on.

There is an exception though - if you are genuinely not feeling well - then that's ok.

Now that this film has been declared the "worst" - I'm hoping it comes to the Melbourne Film Festival in July so I can see it. Just curious!

reply

Well, Mendoza is not exactly the usual Ebert fare ... After all, he (Ebert) is not God ...

A lot of people walked out in Cannes, but not the jury, so of course he could be named Best Director.

'Serbis' was a minor masterpiece, if you ask me.

Hope you get to see the film in Melbourne :-)

reply

you walked out? pu ssie s.

and it's not "one of the worst movies ever made." the only bad movies are boring movies. and it's not as graphic as some say it is. It's one guy's journey into darkness.

the best thing for first timers is to not read any reviews so you wouldnt know wht the hell is going on. let the movie surprise you.

Many of the scenes are so dark, you cant see whats going on
Many crimes are committed out of sight, you can't see the crime being committed.

Many people are so blinded by what they see in front of them, they can't penetrate beyond what's in front of them to see the heart of the matter.

The darkness in front of you pales in comparison with the darkness inside of you.

Looking into the black of night heightens terror.

Darkness, dark thoughts, black heart, black deeds, black dread in the heart and mind.

What has become of the Philippines, the iconic travel brochure land of pristine white sand beaches, splattered with endless city slums, blood-red sunsets bleeding into the endless black of night.

Daytime, the city is alive, hustle and bustle, marriages and babies, families and friends, school and work, then the sun sets, plunging all in harrowing darkness.

People should ask themselves, "what is the director trying to convey by making the darkness too dark to see?" instead of "if I can't see what's happening, should I stop watching the film?".

There is no darkness but ignorance.

'Tis.

reply

Just saw it. It's not a perfect film but it is a harrowing piece of work and for what it is, it's really good.
