Fabulous Film of the 70's, drugs and Halston...

Whether you were a busboy at Studio 54 or Halston himself, everyone had a Fabulous Fun Time in the 70's, in NYC. This film shows old footage of the madness that was. Never to be had again, at least not ever THIS fashionable...
Liza Minnelli says the point was "to dress" and go out disco-ing, and they did.
Gobs of survivors of that whole scene then are interviewed and it is very interesting, at least to me. I was in my 20's then, and would read about it in Vanity Fair, or Vogue...Andy Warhol, Yves St Laurent, and other artists are given credit for the explosion of shock fashion. Halston was the 1st designer to show in China, EVER. He got in when noone else was even invited...cool!
Phil Hartman is shown doing his best Halston on SNL. It is a tragic tale of Halston selling his name to big corporation and losing control of his own name...It kept my interest because I always wondered WHY he sold his name out...
If you like fashion/the 70's hip set of movers and shakers, you will like this film. I did. It is like a really cool time capsule of Fashion & Fun.

I agree with you on the subject -- disco, Halston (and his amazing clothes), NYC in the 70s -- all things I love. The archival footage shown was great, the best thing about this film. But I never got a true feel for who Halston really was, just more about his image which we already knew. The director wasn't a good interviewer and seemed out of his element. I also didn't like the moralistic tone the film took towards the end. An odd choice considering the director is gay; one would think he'd be a little more sympathetic to how things ended for Halston. There's a great doc just waiting to be made about Halston. But for now this will do as a good collection of footage and photos.

Totally agree with you about a great documentary waiting to be made on Halston. But I think I enjoyed this film so much because of all the archival footage, and peeks into Halston's fabulous pad in NYC. I didn't really notice the director much...but I know I will, now, if I watch it again. Yes, the footage and photos were the best part of this film.
