The last 30 minutes (spoilers).

The first hour was GREAT. The scenery was gorgeous, the climbing scenes were great and there was some good suspense and dramatic deaths. For example, the first death scene was so well done. No dramatic build-up or anything fancy, but something really...real.

It was like a better version of the French horror film "High Lane" (without the cannibal killer) and it's probably had the best British scenery in a suspense film since "The Descent". The first hour was VERY promising.

Then the final act came. What was a great suspense thriller turned into a poorly-made and silly action film. Typical "bad" guys and so many stupid moments.

Why did they have to have the big fat kidnapper act like Jason Voorhees and start shooting anyone in his path (while a crowd of hundreds does nothing to stop him)?

Why did he sit on the roof with a rifle when he could have clearly just gone into the building with his handgun and grabbed the girl that way?

Why were there no police anywhere during a festival with all kinds of hazards? The last half hour was so unrealistic and ridiculous. They should have just kept it in the mountains.

Solid 8 film went down to a 6. Did anyone else feel disappointed by the finale?

I saw this last night and I was thinking the same things.

The first 45 minutes were pretty good, nice scenery and the first death was really well done. I also agree that the first death was quite realistic. No dramatic music to puncuate it and it happened all of a sudden. Once the two kidnappers showed up it all went downhill. It all got really silly when they reached the town. Only two cops in the whole place? I know it was a small town but you would expect a stronger police presence with a festival going on. Especially with the festival perfomers using fire and stuff as part of the spectacle.

I also felt some of the acting from the kidnappers and the mercenary guys helping Darko was hammy. They were trying too hard to act like tough guys. The black guy wasn't too bad even though he reminded me of a poor man's Idris Elba. When they reached the town the movie started to look like one of those low-budget Danny Dyer movies. I kept expecting him to turn up lol. I agree that the movie turned into a cliched action thriller during the latter half. That stuff works if you have a hollywood budget and a credible script. It doesn't work when you half-ass it and include stuff that doesn't make any sense. The part where the big guy started shooting from the roof was stupid. The part where he shot the guy and took the mask was also dumb. I also had a hard time figuring out how Melissa George was able to push the guy out of the window so easily. That guy was quite big after all.

It's a shame as the good guys and Anna acted really well. Melissa George always gives a good performance. Karel Roden is also an actor I like a lot and as usual he acted well. Darko, the black guy ( I don't know his name) and the serbians were not that bad. The kidnappers and the other merc guy were sadly the weak links in the acting department.

I'd give it 6 out of ten or maybe seven at most. The first hour was really cool but sadly it all went downhill after that.

Eamon walker (the black guy)! Is actually a really good actor. He was brilliant in Oz - I can't believe he isn't more famous. Very good film though I wish a few more of them had survived. Try Triangle if you like Melissa, that's a really good film too.

I was trying to figure out when this movie went down hill and I agree with you. It jumped the shark when the annoying, stupid kidnappers showed up.

reply

agree with all this absolutely. first hour was superb, the scottish festival scenes and onward were awkward and formulaic. i gave it a 7, could have been an 8 if it hadnt been so immature toward the end.

Totally agree. What also annoyed me is when she ran into the house, knowing full well that she would be getting the people inside it killed.

And also how the mercenary guy who proclaimed that "we leave the friendly fire to the yanks" would just open fire on one of the climbers without confirming that was the girl he was supposed to be looking for wasa with them, or that he was a hostile target. He was supposed to be a highly trained soldier so would have been able to tell if the man was armed or not.

Agree 100% to you, from a stylish suspense thriller movie, it transformed into poor mans CRAZIES in last half...

Why so Serious ?

I totally agree with your review, the last part almost ruined the movie for me. The actions of the kidnappers don't make any logical sense, once the girl is in town the best thing they could do is to give up and run the hell away from there. I tried to rationalize their actions with the fact that they were desperate to get the 6 millions but the fat kidnapper was way too over the top!

Yeah I agree except that it didn't almost ruin the film for me - it DID ruin it.

The town scene was just a joke, I really wish they'd stayed in the woods. Melissa George's character - why charge into someone's house and not ensure that its locked or ask the guy for help? And back at the police station, was there just a random knife for Ed to just pick up? I know the director was trying to trick us with the policeman actually being legit too, but it just didn't work.

Basically it felt like another film, and when they showed the home footage stuff during the credits I totally forgot about those other characters.

Very poor.

reply

The knife wasn't random - it was on the table from the cake the policeman gave to the kid.

Even with all these poor plot points aside, for me it can't negate how good 3/4 of the film was. I still rate it about 8 or 8.5.

And I actually thought the footage shown during the credits was what they took on their camera that was smashed at the beginning. That would've made the whole story more sad..

reply

The first 2/3 was great with only the last 1/3 being unrealistic. I would have much prefered Alison to have confronted the bad guys in the mountains and beaten them using her mountain skills etc.

Incredible, breathtaking cinematography. Solid 2 thirds. Didn't like the lead, but then again, it was more dramatic that way when people around her started dropping. Sadly, the quality dropped as well. Seems that it was not intended for repeated viewings, which is a shame, it could've been really good. I saw this just for Eamonn Walker, but he's got so little screen time.

It wasn't British scenery. It was Scottish scenery. There's a difference. You see Britain is England and the English government and the Royals likes to Label a part of Ireland and the whole of Scotland and also Wales as Britain too. But that doesn't make it so. It's Scottish scenery. So stop trying to claim all that is good to be British.

Don't spoil "High Lane" you "#ยค%#.

I agree almost entirely with the previous comments. The "gunfight" in the town was somewhat cliched but I did enjoy the last 5 minutes or so.
I loved the chief gangster's parting comments to the kidnapper:-
"Before you decide to take someone's money you should first be worried about how he lined his pockets in the first place".
