People seem to be really angry about this movie

The amount of people that disliked Somewhere and decided it is worthwhile to come to imdb and rage about is astonishing. I mean, it must have really hit deep and hard for someone to waste more time writing a rage review on a forum after wasting time and money on the movie itself. I did like Somewhere very much. In fact I think it was one of the best movies of 2010 and definitely the best US movie of the year. That being said, I can understand perfectly well why someone can dislike this film. I wont elaborate, it all have been said many many times. But what cant I understand is the RAGE. This movie isn't offensive in any way, it's premise is rather simple, there is nothing artificially confusing about it, it doesn't try to be what it's not or appeal to someone who won't appreciate it. Sure, i can easily pictured someone falling asleep half way through, but seriously, what's up with rage?

Somewhere is film-making of a high order. The opening sequence makes it clear that focused, thoughtful viewers--those who need not be spoon-fed with sign-posts and tired formulas--will be richly rewarded. In addition to Ms. Coppola's considerable gifts, Somewhere is graced by the remarkable cinematography of the great Harris Savides, who tragically died last week at 55:

"Harris Savides, one of America’s most respected cinematographers, who helped directors like Woody Allen, Ridley Scott, Noah Baumbach, Sofia Coppola, David Fincher and especially Gus Van Sant achieve the visual expressivity they sought, died on Tuesday in Manhattan.

The cause was brain cancer, said his wife, Medine.

A onetime fashion photographer who later shot music videos for the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson, Mr. Savides began working in feature films in the mid-1990s. He soon took a turn toward the subtle, sublimating the visual flash of runway shows and rock ’n’ roll to serve the sensibility of auteur directors. Known as a lighting expert and someone with a gift for talking and listening to directors, he became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after collaborators. (excerpt from the NY Times Obituary)"

He shot Ms. Coppola's latest film, The Bling Ring," which has not yet been released.

I think people might have expected something like "Lost in Translation" or something with some entertaining funny parts and instead got a incredibly boring, dreary, depressing movie and were extremely disappointed. Steven Dorf is not exactly leading man material or someone you want to watch for over an hour.

I don't understand the hate either. it is explained, quite clearly, it is a DRAMA. Not a comedy. Not an action. Not an adventure. people can be so clueless.

I thought the film moved slowly in the beginning, but I got into it. It is atmosphere setting.

People hate on what they don't understand. It's a character study and it was very well made and well acted, one of Stephans best performances I think

Dorff was good given the lousy script. I GOT the film, I understood it, it was just dull and slow. I fast-forwarded thru many parts of it, and didn't miss anything. I'm not really angry about it, it cost me about .25 cents to record it off HBO to DVD. I'm just mad it never went anywhere, even though I KNEW it wouldn't after that ridiculous opening segment. (A guy driving in circles for five minutes.....really, Sophia??)

Son, you can't polish a turd
