Ugly hotel

Is the Chateau Marmont really as nasty as it is portrayed in that movie? His room is hideous and so are the hallways. Who in their right mind would $415/night to stay in that sh*thole?

reply

Jmes Dean, Sal Minio, John Belushi, Dominick Dunn, Anthony Perkins and countless other famous people stayed there...it's like an institution. People who want their privacy stay there. What happens at the Marmont stays at the Marmont...except John kind of blew that.

reply

(and someone blew him ahh... sorry) Famous female nude photographer Helmut Newton did also I believe. I think some scenes in Somewhere refer to that.

Did you mean Helmut Newton?

I think there is a scene in this movie which is a direct reference to his death, when the camera passes a crashed car on the way up to the chateau.

Helmut Berger on the other hand is Luchino Visconti's self proclaimed "widow".

reply

Yes, sorry, I edited my mistake. Helmut Newton is indeed the person that is referred to in Somewhere. Thanks for the link, and for the detailed info on "the other Helmut" (Helmut Berger - I read in his IMDb bio that he was also in Godfather III as the character Keinszig, nicknamed "God's Banker," who is the Swiss chief accountant of the Vatican Bank).

Agree that it's nothing special in terms of quality, but its legacy and position in Hollywood's history allows for such high prices.

A close relative of mine used to work there in the late 90s and she met so many famous people and has some interesting stories to tell. i even went to a party held there thanks to her. What she told me and what I saw was more interesting than this movie.

reply

She really sanitized everything, I wonder why. I guess she was afraid to show the true. Everyone in Hollywood is afraid of the truth.

They cater to celebrities who like to play by their own rules. Let's just say the concierge service delivers many vices to people of notoriety who in this case don't want notoriety while staying there. You'd think they could update the interior though, but the clients probably also buy ripped jeans and t-shirts for $600.

reply

Basically it's just a place for seedy celebs to hole up and do drugs for days. Lindsay Lohan is the main poster child the hotel has had for the past 6 years.

The Chateau Marmont is a Hollywood institution - in a good way!

The place is so full of history and so low key compared to the falshy hotels like Beverly Hills, etc. - that IMO there is no comparison.

I was fortunate enough to stay there 3 times in the early 1990's - saw countless celebs when we stayed there and stayed in amazing rooms that were more like apartments than hotel rooms.

Nothing like it - I'll always have great memories of my stays there! This film caught my attention primarily because so much of it was filmed there!

reply

I've never stayed there, but the fact that it's so chock-full of old Hollywood history, and hasn't been revamped to death and had its soul removed, is one of the reasons I watched this film.

Horrid! Looks like it would have mice and roaches. Wires run on the outside of walls, broken tiles, poorly-pieced-together woodwork. Horrid!

It has always been a dream of mine to stay in the chateau, but after seeing this movie no thank you. It looks horrible. If i am paying lots of money to stay somewhere I want it to look good. If i ever get to LA I'll try and book in for dinner so I can see the place, but no way would i ever pay hundreds of dollars to stay in a room which looks like it was last decorated in 1977.

Interiors, for a director who is so into imagery she does a horrible job of showcasing the CM. Interiors. This website shows more of inside the hotel and it looks far better than in Nowhere-I mean somewhere...

It not just a set of hotel rooms but actually comprises of apartments and cottages etc.

She could have made the Chateau Marmont look as glamorous as it can be. But she didn't want to do so. She wanted us to see the hotel through the eyes of a character who has been living there for months on end.

To him, it isn't exciting or beautiful anymore. Its boring filled with boring people including himself. This character is at rock bottom. Although she didn't show drugs, he was obviously in the same headspace that Belushi was way back in the 80's.

Can't say I ever had a room there, but in '68 was often a visitor.

Alway had good memories of the place and loved the little patios outside many of the rooms.

It was way cooler than the places I usually ended up crashing.

Wonder what the rates were 45 years ago.

reply

Anyone can go there and hang out by the pool you see a lot of celebs. We use to hang there often when I was in high school lol... my older brother would get us in.

reply

Rooms aren't all that. It's a place to go stargazing like the Roosevelt Hotel back in its heyday.

It looks like a good place to die of a heroin overdose. Certainly there are worse places to die of a heroin overdose. Given the choice, I'd rather not die of a heroin overdose, though when the time comes, this doesn't seem like a bad place for checking out.
