An alternate version?

I heard that this sick movie has some good cinematography and some beautiful scenes. I would watch an edited version, with the more extreme stuff removed, because I'm curious about it. And I am a fan of one of the main actors, Zenza Raggi. But I won't watch the things that are described here. I don't really know why anyone normal would want to..

There is no edited version that I know of. But I don't understand why you judge a film you haven't even seen so harshly. Is it disturbing? Yeah. Is it horrific? Yeah. But it's as beautiful as it is ugly. The cinematography and score are very good. I'm not recommending you watch this though, because you don't have an open enough mind. You already hate it without having seen it. You won't be able to see past the ugliness to see how really beautiful it is.

I have an open mind, especially when it comes to art. For instance I appreciate the visual beauty of Pasolini's "Salo," and can look at the violence and sadism in that film, because it IS art. I just can't imagine ANY artist, no matter how talented, being capable of making things like animal mutilation, defecation, corpse fingering etc, seem like anything more than cheap shock gimmicks. My mind is open enough..I just believe that there should be a limit on how far people go for the sake of "art." And we should draw a line on what we are willing to expose ourselves to. It actually sounds like some of the people involved in making this, might be psychologically unbalanced. I don't want to exploit someone's sickness for the sake of being entertained. Most importantly, a true artist will be able to simulate these acts, to create an illusion. "Serbian Film" accomplishes that. It's an extremely well-made movie, and the action is completely simulated. And if it isn't simulated then it is no longer fantasy, but rather documentary. I'm not some animal rights fanatic either; i guess I would just feel like a scumbag watching a cat get it's throat cut on film. It's not necessary for this to be a "good" film. Someone with talent could get the point across by cutting away at the last second, and maybe focus on the expressions of the actors instead. I feel the same way about pornography; focusing the camera on the face of a beautiful woman while she has an orgasm, is a lot sexier than shoving the camera into her vagina.

I respect the stance you've taken. Your response made me realize it isn't really about open-mindedness, but more about personal limits. How much your willing to accept. And I think your position is completely reasonable. Honestly, this probably isn't really a film you recommend anyway. It's a film you seek out if you choose. And I won't fault anyone for not wanting to see the extreme acts in this film.

I appreciate your response. I'm glad you see where I'm coming from. Actually i just finished watching "Melancholie der Engel," as curiosity got the best of me. I will say this; the film is actually well-made, with some truly beautiful cinematography and a truly unique and sinister atmosphere. But it is as I thought before seeing it; I believe the film is severely compromised by the director's lack of control. I found the film to be fascinating and artistically competent, but it all falls apart during the last 40 minutes, when the hypnotic spell is broken by a bunch of nasty, childish urination and defecation scenes, that I'm sure only succeeded in alienating almost everyone who watched it. In the final scenes I think it ceases to be an art film and turns into a juvenile exercise in 'how shocking and disgusting can I be..' Imagine the shower scene in "Psycho," if Hitchcock decided to include a shot of the knife graphically going into Janet Leigh's vagina. A scene that is considered to be one of the finest horror moments in film history, would be considered vulgar trash and people would laugh and dismiss the entire film as junk. Marian Dora could have taken some lessons from the masters. It's sad because he is a very talented guy; he just needs to grow up and stop squashing worms on camera..I mean I stopped squashing worms when I was like 8 years old.. Still I'm glad I saw the film, and I was hoping to see Moroccan porn actor Zenza Raggi in a legitimate film..unfortunately I'm still waiting..
