I liked this movie, A lot.

I found this movie pretty entertaining. Not familiar with the comic books or any such thing, was just looking for something to stream on Netflix... I gave it 5 stars there (and 8 here on IMDB).

Really have no clue why people wouldn't be into it or so hard with their ratings/comments. Most likely (I'd think) they are the comic book geeks who are miffed this wasn't made into some kind of anime cartoon.

ditto,

I don't get the hate..... because it doesn't have Kristen stewart and her vampires were real... gargoyles... pfft... how fake is that...

reply

It was an awful movie.

It had nothing to do with Frankenstein, it was just a Gargoyles vs. Demons digital crap fest that they stuck Frankenstein in between the two groups in order to put a familiar name out there for advertising purposes.

reply

So were all the Twilight Movies and the Harry Potter Movies and Lord of the Rings movies etc. So you either have no real point or your point just plain sucks.

reply

All of those were based off of the books. This film definitely wasn't based off the original book.

reply

Uh, no. That's nothing at all like those movies.

I nearly stopped watching early on but stuck with it and tried to ignore the supernatural element and found it was an alright movie (although very short.)
It's a mess up of Frankenstein though.

One can not like a movie and not hate it, either. I didn't like it. I didn't hate it. Then again, I was flipping. Yes, its that bad, you can fill in any plot point in a few seconds when you flip back.

Basically, the conversation was: "hey, we've made $800 gazillion on Underworld, but its tapped out. Why not...hey, yeah, lets just change the vampires to werewolves and the vampires to demons. These sci fi fans are idiots and they'll buy ANYTHING..."

reply

I enjoyed the hell out of it. A good, fun, mega-budget B-movie.
I just wish Adam was more creaturish looking. He didn't look like he was pieced together 200 years ago.

I have zero familiarity with the comic books this was based on and I firmly dislike it. I would suspect that the majority of people who don't like it fall in the same boat; movies are more popular than comics.

The reason that I, Frankenstein is nigh abysmal is because it tries to do what so many other movies are trying to do now and walk the line between horror and action. It's not scary, spooky, gory, or surreal enough to be horror, and it isn't light, fast-paced, or visually interesting enough to be a good action movie.

1. Ok, sure, the first couple of fight scenes are cool enough, but they drag on, one after the other, with almost no point. They just aren't very interesting.

2. The hasty exposition and poorly developed mythos leave almost all of us scratching our heads over this supposed battle between demons and gargoyles and where in the heck a misfit like Frankenstein's Monster fits in. The story is one big piecemeal clusterfreak. In fact, very little attempt was made at putting a compelling story on screen. It's as if someone said "hey let's throw gargoyles, demons, and Frankenstein into a movie!"

3. It takes itself way to seriously with the modern labs, the plight of the gargoyles, and even Eckhart's portrayal of the monster. There's nothing serious about this flick, and it would've done better to present itself as camp.

4. The Monster isn't impressive at all nor does it ever matter that he is Frankenstein's Monster. He could've been anyone. He's got a couple of scars on his face, so what? He just looks like a dude. Working in all the allusions to the original novel was just weak. The whole point of Frankenstein's Monster was him finding his place in the universe. Where did he fit? Why was he cast aside by his creator? It's all supposed to be symbolic of man's relationship with God; in this case, the Monster is man and man is God. The film made no effort to touch on that, aside from some flimsy quest for the Creature to regain his soul, lifted straight out of Buffy/Angel.

5. It fails at being a horror movie, which, by and large, is the kind of audience that a film about Frankenstein, gargoyles, and demons is going to attract. No gore, no scares, no suspense.

6. Ultimately, it's boring. The story is boring. The factions seem to be monsters almost incidentally. They could've been Merfolk, Elves, Wizards, Crips, Bloods, Accountants, Secret Agents...it really doesn't matter. There just isn't anything there to validate WHY it must be demons, gargoyles, and Frankenstein's monster.

I could understand the younger crowd gleaning SOME entertainment out of this simply because the filmmakers threw so much at the wall, but for the rest of us, its scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's not a good film, and it's not a good story.

Like the OP I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I also appreciate your articulation of reasons the movie did not work in your opinion...reasonable dialog is in short supply on IMDB. A few thoughts as I reflect on your offering:

For me this area--of the mythology--was most engaging. I guess I was caught up in the meta-narrative. With only a very passing knowledge of Frankenstein, my very limited understanding of his origin/purpose was that he was a green "block-head" with a bolt in his neck who wandered around drooling and moaning and hurting people: essentially a science experiment gone wrong. So entering this movie that's exactly what I expected to see. When the Gargoyles first transformed (or whatever) I thought "Oh brother...so it's one of those 'everything is alive' flicks." But as the story developed I began to understand a deeper reality and dilema that Frankenstein--a one-of-a-kind creation--was facing. Put on top of that the fact that he is thrust into this ageless struggle he's a bit of a no-man's-land (pardon the pun). When I realized that his true crisis is that he does not have a soul nor mortality, I began to see the question of free-will and determinism come into the movie. Was it great? No. But was it better than I expected? You bet. And in the end the mythos, limited as you think it was, got me to think deeper about what was really happening in the story line.

This was the other item I saw differently. I found the concept that a) Frankenstein is immortal; b) demons can be dispatched to hell; and c) angels could be dispatched to Heaven was a pretty interesting idea. All parties did have something to lose, and later we realize something to gain, by involving Frankenstein on "their side."

So just some thoughts. Again, maybe I'm the odd one here who wasn't looking for a horror-cliche or a campy film (I am sooooo over campy), that I appreciated a sincere effort even if it wasn't well received.

I found this movie to be entertaining. There are other movies that I have watched lately, some of which are supposedly better, but were pretentious because they tried to be serious and yet were unrealistic.

complications123 spot on with everything you wrote...you nailed this crapfest.

Could it be because they took the classic Frankenstein story and gave it the modern "Underworld" treatment?

On a side note, having Aaron Eckhart as your lead is a foreboding note. He's a fringe A-lister, at best!

I liked it quite a lot myself. I don't give a damn about it not "being like Frankenstein". Nothing wrong with updating an old (and not terribly good) story.

reply

I liked it a lot. The plot was a nice twist about life being given by God.

If you have never read Frankenstein, I recommend giving it a go. It's not just that it was written by a 19-year-old woman at the time it was written, but it's an amazing piece of literature. It's a difficult read prose-wise, and the language is beautiful. It's a totally ten-thumbs up read.

reply

I've read the original novel, this has nothing to do with it. In saying that: that did not bother me.

I have no idea if there is a comic book series, and what it entails. Also, doesn't bother me.

What bothers me is: the rushing of each scene without a story or any depth to any of them.

There's no story. There's a lot of preaching, though -- also with no depth.

That's my problem.

Loved it as well. And, like you I caught it on Netflix. You know what? I'm starting to not trust IMDB ratings. I've seen several pretty good movies that gets low ratings here. But, what do I know? Maybe my tastes suck compared to the majority. Oh well, while people get harder to please and complaining all the time I'll be chilling with my ice tea watching me some good movies...lol.

I enjoyed the movie as it did not pretend to be anything but light entertainment (and had Yvonne Strahovski...yummy).
So, here's to the haters ...Perhaps you were expecting too much?

same as a huge horror fan and love these types of movies this one was a good action movie , now if you wanted Frankenstein old school then this is not for you as this is only Frankenstein in name . as a movie i really liked it and the women thats the head of the gargoyle order is amazing and just stunning that she must be a angel not a gargoyle . I rate it 7.5 for action fun flick i had more enjoyment with this then junk like dardevil (benefier movie) or the first avengers movie but then we all like are own things so you decide.

Just finished watching this movie tonight. I am not much into horror and gore, the only reason I saw this was because it has a 12 rating.

It pasted the time away and before I knew it “The End”.
