Nirvana was/is overrated

Plus, Kurt was kind of a bitch and a horrible guitarist. Watching this only makes me dismiss nirvana even more...especially since it reminded me how much crap Kurt liked to talk. Soundgarden, PJ, Alice in Chains, and even Mudhoney were insanely better than Nirvana.

And even after Layne died (even on the same day?) years after Kurt, you still only hear about Kurt. Seriously...what was so great??

Hey jpowers4667!
As a huge grunge fan, I have been wondering the same for many years. I listened to Nirvana when I was 14, it was December 1997 and everyone in my high school talked about this band whose desperate lead singer had committed suicide. So I asked my older sister to buy me NEVERMIND for Christmas. Listening to it was sort of a mandatory rite of passage then, at least it was in Italy, where I am from. Nirvana was actually the first band from Seattle that I ever got to listen and I enjoyed the album very much. To me it was something new, I had never listened to something like that before.
Now, I have my copy of NEVERMIND right here, I have not listened to it for ages and I don't need to: I know it by heart and I think that, if I ever listened to it today, it would leave a bad taste in my mouth so to speak. Last time I listened to it, it was when I initiated my little sister into rock music (I like to keep traditions alive, although "the seasons roll on by") and she liked it a lot as well. Today both she and I think that, NEVERMIND apart, Nirvana are far too overrated from a musical point of view. Too much Kurt, who could neither sing nor play decently, in there and not enough Krist nor Dave. The whole myth that was built around Kurt after he passed is just disgusting: it is exactly what he feared the most and tried to avoid. Ironically, it is because of this myth that people are attracted to Nirvana. Anyway, I understand the powerful emotions that an album like NEVERMIND can still produce on people. It features undoubtably unique sound and atmosphere. I cannot say what it is, but it is there (or rahter it was there last time I checked), at least in my opinion.
That being said, I tried to listen to what Nirvana released before and after NEVERMIND and I simply could not stand it. I could not hear the band evolve. Or maybe it was just me that could not evolve by listening to those albums. We were incompatible. Like you, I prefer Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone and Soundgarden when it comes to "the Seattle Sound". Mad Season only record gives me shivers. Man, that is some quality stuff. Layne was a total genius. I love Eddie Vedder's voice in everything he has done so far. One album I can never get enough of is TEMPLE OF THE DOG. That is just superb, my all time favourite.
No, definitely I will not put Nirvana in my top 10, not even in my top 20 or 30. Yet I will cherish my long-time unlistened NEVERMIND cd forever, because thanks to it I got to discovered the above mentioned wonderful artists.

Sorry for the long reply. How did you like the documentary, by the way?

Take care,
Elisa

Sorry for the delay but I just finished watching Pearl Jam Twenty (almost 3 years after you (lol) and I just wanted to say I completely agree with what you wrote then! :)

I like Nirvana, but they wouldn't even make my top 10 for grunge bands.
