MIA is missing in action, which means you're still active in the service, they just can't find you whether you're dead or alive.
AWOL means absent without leave. You're alive. You've left without permission.
The husband was MIA.
But what if he's missing because he left without leave?

He appeared to be an honorable man. I don't think that's the way they wanted to story to go.
shareHe was clearly injured upon his return. So it is possible he went MIA in a battle, found by some medics in another unit and sent him to a hospital to heal while his name and info that he was WIA, wounded-in-action, failed to get back to HQ.
