when they were randomly lost in what appears to be the backyard....

...none of them thought of following their footsteps back? it wasn't snowing, their tracks would have still been there.

and did they really just stand in that same spot the whole day, freaking out?

this movie was so god-awful it wasn't even funny. great acting. horrible....everything else.

Well they were busy looking around for things that looked familiar...like trees...

I thought the exact same thing.....how can you get lost when you walk through snow? There were a whole group of them leaving massive tracks through the snow, just follow them back to the house!!!! I thought 'oh, it's just a plot hole that the writer hasn't thought about'......however, later, still lost, they're looking in the snow at animal tracks...? So they (and the writer) think to have them looking at animal tracks in the snow, but not their own to get back to the house?!

They say they are going back a different way then they came.

Yep, spot on. I wondered why they were following a guy into the woods who wouldn't think the backtrack over their FRESH tracks in the snow. I could understand the confusion if it had been summer, but footprints in the snow makes it a glaringly stupid thing to miss... you'd expect at least one adult to have that thought.
