"By 2015, there will be 1 million charging stations in the world."

Well, right now, there are about 22,000 in the United States.

Does the rest of the world have 978,000?

reply

Well, Chargepoint alone - one of the bigger charging networks - has around 20,000 locations in the US, and claims to be adding 500 per month.

There are other charging networks, too, so we know the number of public charge locations is higher than this.

Then, don't forget that every electric car owner owns a personal charging station. Wikipedia says the number of plug-in cars in the US today is over 260,000.

Altogether, it's probably around 300,000 installed charging stations in the US today.

Wikipedia also says that the US represents 43% of the plug-in car market, with the other 57% in other countries. Assuming the same proportions of chargers to electric vehicles applies to them, the worldwide total would probably be around 697,000 charging stations.

So no, the prediction of 1 million charging stations probably won't be met by the start of 2015. But it could be close to that number by the end of 2015.

Study from 2010:

None of these idiots are ever held accountable for writing garbage like this. The
technology is still unproven, and all what we have are wackos on forums like
this suggestion you simply 'steal' electricity from people's homes by sneaking
into their yard and plugging into their outlet.

Looks like you need to go back and read the comment you replied to. I made my case in there.

Hey Apeweek. Long time huh?

EV cars are not catching on. Even after all the subsidies, regulations/etc. People
would rather buy a gas guzzler than run around looking for an outlet.

Also, charging stations are something of question. Example: Tesla is offering
their proprietary "Supercharging" stations, but only for Tesla cars. So if you're
driving some other EV car, you're SOL. Are gas stations like that? Of course not.

The other thing is charging time. 30 minutes at the Supercharging...the maximum
anyone wants to spend refilling their car is FIVE MINUTES.

The three things EV cars need to surpass before anyone will take it serious are as follows:

- Convenience/Refill time: Comparable or faster than gas

- Range & Accessibility. Same or exceed a conventional tank of gas

- Price. Price needs to be basically on par with most cars. $30K is still too much when
you can get a really nice gas powered car for HALF PRICE.

Hey, apeweek yourself, whatever that is. I hope its something painful.

The rest of what you wrote shows you can't read the comments you reply to. I don't talk to people who can't be bothered to read what I write.
