I think the movie was trying to say this was being used to set him up and he fell for it, but in the book the way they did it was so much better.
I know I keep talking about how great the book was (audiobook in my case) compared to the movie, but none of these stupid plotholes or "twists" that make no sense happened in it. It had plenty of perfectly reasonable twists all on it's own, and this movie just ruined that. I hate it when that happens. I bet the writer is pretty upset too. He handed Hollywood a solid, though nothing too fancy, script which could have sold a lot more of his books. Instead they churn out a mess that's trying way too hard and tosses out some of the best parts until it doesn't make sense anymore. I don't know why they do that, but they do. Best not to try to find logic in it, or this terrible, terrible movie.
