Calling BS on a major plot point

Even in real life, Richard Dreyfus is 67, well past enrollment age for Medicare. So Adam wouldn't be carrying his old man on private health insurance. Without having me detail here Medicare A & B and supplemental coverage, which would make most people's eyes bleed, while there are copays involved, there would be no "$40,000 procedures." Unless the procedures were experimental or deemed unnecessary, which is a whole other cr@p sandwich, but in the context of the movie, Dreyfus wouldn't have astronomical medical bills with a decent supplemental coverage, many of which have no premiums, just around $110 deduction from one's Social Security check is all you pay, other than the aforementioned copays depending on the optional supplemental plan.

Maybe the dad was 55 or so, but portrayed as older due to the difficult life he led?

But, yeah, probably a plot hole...this movie was filled of them, methinks.

Actor's age does not equal characters age... Hence we see 30 year olds playing high school kids...

I still agree with the OP, even if the dad was not Medicare age yet, he would still be covered because he would have been on Social Security disability because of his heart disease.

We aren't led to believe that the dad was young for his ailment. He was probably in his 60's.

The part I can't agree with in the movie is when the son says he thinks dad is "putting it" to the nurse. No, just no. The nurse isn't that desperate.

The movie is probably not accurate but note that "Medicare is for people age 65 and older and those who have special condition or disability.".
