Looks ridiculous and humorless

I saw the trailer..."There's an Indian here"...Lines like this seem very old-fashioned and unfunny...

reply

Then you should definitely not go see the movie.

If you don't know what they're saying, turn on the subtitles.

reply

So how old *are* you exactly, dear little troll stratosl ?

reply

In this case, the 'troll' seems to be on the side of the good. "Good" meaning politically correct, modern, ethical and egalitarian. As opposed to the opposite of these qualities. To repeat from another post, we should really hold any serious criticism of the movie until we actually view it. If the Indian characters are all stereotypical, caricatured, stock-in-trade types, the accusation of racism will be correct.

reply

No, Stratosl is right. Watched the movie today, and must say it's nothing more than a Western caricature of India. Marigold Hotel is cliched, splattered with preachy lines and terrible humour.

reply

You forgot to say that was your opinion of the movie, because that's what your statement is: an opinion.

I rather enjoyed this film. I found a quirkiness to it and found it unique for this day and age, especially when Hollywood has been spewing the same crap for the past decade.

Just because you're too stupid to understand it, doesn't mean it's a plot hole

reply

If one looks at ozzjim's profile, one will see he dislikes every movie. That alone should be enough for one to decide how much weight to give ozzjim's opinions.

reply

That's crap; the line was taken out of context, said by a prejudiced character who, by the end, had her eyes opened at last about the people and culture of India. Western caricature of India? So I take it your Indian? Because friends of mine who are have said this film reps the country as it is - and the film is certainly a great travelogue for the rich and beautiful country it's mostly set in. Get a grip, Ozzjim.

reply

Are you describing yourself?

reply

I've just seen this. It's neither ridiculous nor humourless. If people really want to work that hard, I imagine they'll be able to find something to get offended at, but it they'd probably enjoy themselves a lot more if they just relax and let themselves laugh. It's a lovely film.

reply

I just saw this, this afternoon. It was one of those movies that by the end you want to keep seeing what happens to the characters. I am an old, midwestern gal, but for some reason I have an affinity towards the Indian people, and I loved watching them in this movie. Was it perfect in every way for everyone? No. Was it a very good movie? Yes. I would see it again.

You have an affinity towards the Indian people. How nice!

reply

It is an amazing movie. I loved it, and I'm not even that old (36).
If you are concerned about Indian people being mistreated, how about doing something constructive about it, instead of being all "holier than thou" on the internet ? There are several charitable institution in India (and plenty other countries) that can use your help. If all you do is sit on the internet and act all noble, you are just a moron and a pretender.

This is an amazing movie, which gives a great portrait of India and its people. To a point I actually want to go visit it.

I just watched it the other day and this describes it perfectly. Frankly, for me the movie got off to a slow start and for awhile I was having trouble caring too much about what they were up to. Yet by the end I genuinely wanted it to keep going. There was something about the depth it went into each character's story, and the way those stories resolved, that had me entranced.

reply

I didnt find it offensive at all, however I found it to be pedestrian and predictable, not to mention boring and sorely lacking in humor. I think very old people might find it charming and lovely, good for them.

I am Ripper... Tearer... Slasher... Gouger...I am the Teeth in the Darkness

reply

I happened to actually enjoy the movie quite a lot.

reply

Loved this movie!

reply

It could have been, but was not. And actually, given the cast, it was unlikely to be. Someone managed to persuade a LOT of top notch actors and actresses that this was worth their time and effort.

The CHARACTER who delivered that line was, at that moment, very old-fashioned and unfunny.

reply

This is a film about change and transformation, the success of those who open their minds and hearts. See it. It is inspiring.

reply

Really? To me it looked funny and interesting and I plan to go see it if at all possible.

'crawl back into my hole' is it? Well, you can just go d** in a fire.

reply

Don't go then! I saw it tonight and laughed so hard. Loved the movie.

The character who starts out as a bigot changes.

reply

A bigot? Did you mean a racist or is she bigoted as well?

"Which it will be ready when it's READY!" Preserved Killick, Master and Commander

reply

Definition of BIGOT
: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

reply

Ah, OK, I didn't actually know the dictionary definition of bigot. I'm from Glasgow and we generally use it to describe someone who is religiously prejudiced as opposed to racist, I didn't realise that it could be applied in both situations.
