This movie is part side story, mostly it was made as a back to basics type film with a low budget like the first movie rather than the big, expensive CGI extravaganza we saw with Chronicles. To me, it seems logical for the Necros to leave Riddick abandoned on a planet rather than leading an army to the gates of Hell, it's just not his character to do so.
There are two versions of this film. Twohy included an alternate ending in the unrated version where Riddick kills Crone, the Necromonger that shot at him and left him under all that rubble at the start of the film. Riddick looks out the ship's window and sees the Underverse, confirming Vaako crossed over the other side and became a holy half-dead like the previous Lord Marshal. So, in a way, this is supposed to Lead to Riddick 4. The only question is will we wait another 9 years for a sequel? It would be great to have just one more movie to complete the story, or at least another video game or anime. Unlike other done and dusted franchises such as the Terminator, the Riddick series still feels like there's so much more story that needs to be told.
