shareHis leg is already badly broken. He places his foot in between 2 rocks so he can set the bone. Then he uses the shin guard on his armor and the 2 metal spikes to "cast" his leg.

After he sets his leg they go in to a flash back with Vaako (Karl Urban) his henchman Krone. Riddick want to go to Furya. Krone takes him to the barren planet where Riddick has to fight the three guards and Krone. Krone shoots the fault lines in the cliff rock so it breaks away. Riddick falls to his (presumed) death but "only" gets a broken leg and scrapped up a bit....
Did you really miss that whole sequence?

the beginning of the film had a vulture like bird picked on his hand while he's buried by the rubble that presumed from the fall. I had to shake my head..
