First half hour was pretty interesting

Seeing him go all survivor on an alien planet was cool... Then they tried to remake Pitch Black and it all went to hell...

Disagree. When the bounty hunters arrive the film gets better.

*Spoilers*

The first half hour to 40 minutes are brilliant, including the Necromonger flashback on the extended DVD. The Mercs provide great characterisation when they show up in the second act. The third act for me is when things get a little sloppy and slow paced. It would have been great here to introduce some new creatures. Looking at these new predators, plus lack of suspense, is what kills the movie since in Pitch Black we barely see the monsters at all until the end of the film. Not only that, half the third act was spoiled in the trailer showing Santana's death and all. What makes up for a awful third act is the extended ending opening for a sequel to the Underverse. :)

I completely agree with FilmKoala, it gets much more interesting when the mercs arrive on the scene. Still, I didn't have much of a problem with the first half, except it got a little boring at certain points.

Ya after he starting cutting off peoples heads with a machete balancing football kick and score, I rolled my eyes...the film was somewhat realistic fiction till then..

The movie goes from interesting, to stupid, to a lazy rehash of Pitch Black.

The rehash is unfortunate, but it's really the mercs that ruined the movie. First a band of retards land to try and capture Riddick, followed by a team that initially appeared far more competent, but then their captain immediately hands over his ship's only source of power to the retards for safe keeping.

Most people are already at a severe disadvantage to Riddick... Having him fight retarded people just seems unnecessarily cruel.

Given the Riddickulous (ha ha, see what I did there?) mess that Chronicles became, the franchise's only hope was a clear and definite return to the Pitch Black side of things, really...

I liked this film. It had touch points with the previous two, but went off in another direction. I liked the new planet, dog and the mercs and the reworking of the Johns relationship (even though "Big" should have been a brother rather than a father.🐭

I like both Pitch Black and The Chronicles. They are different, but both very much original. But this new movie partly disappointed me, because it is just more fighting. It feels almost like a B-movie, nothing really new, except maybe from the arts department. And Vin Diesel's acting carries it through. I was hoping for a new storyline to shed some light into the underverse.

Karl Urban is credited on the second place, but he isn't even in the movie, just as a recap.

reply

I like the whole thing. It is like pitch black but it's different. It shows a different side to him. I wish the movie was longer and showed more of him on the planet. And I really like the mercs. Funny and crude!

Did the sequel do very badly? Definitely seemed like this had a smaller budget. At times it was dancing dangerously towards "straight-to-DVD" territory. I was still entertained though.

reply

What happened was most fans wanted a return to pitch black style with this after 2 so they got a lower budget an did a more pitch black style film this film feels totally different from pitch black until the third act

reply

I agree. The first half hour is superb.
