Watch "John Rabe." It's a movie based on real events, without the shmaltzy tone of this one and without the buffoonish carrying on of Christian Bale.

shareI rewatched this recently, a few years after my original post above, and I have to say now that I enjoyed it. It got better as the story developed, which makes me think I didn't watch the whole movie the first time around. Ah me.
shareI gave this a watch years ago and thought it was pretty good. Gave it a rewatch and it’s so heartbreaking. I wish they would’ve told us what happened to the brothel women.

shareWell of course they are all dead *now*. But I mean in the immediate aftermath of the movie events. Were they really taken to a party? Did they really sing? Did they get to escape? The ending was too ambiguous for my taste, although it was a great film regardless.
