Christian Bale

How did they ever entice him to appear in this over-long sanitized version of what happened in Nanking? He is way too talented for such a role.

reply

I'm glad they enticed him. The role was perfect for him and he was great! It reminded me a little of his performance in Out of the Furnace. (I watched both movies in the past week). I'm a huge fan of the "Everyman" hero.

I saw Flowers of War at the cinema when it finally came to the US and hubby and I thought it was a great movie and Bale was superb as Miller in my humble opinion. Saw Out of the Furnace last year at the movies and it is one of my favorite CB roles...he was brilliant! Hope you enjoy my CB slide! 

I thought Bale did great in his role. However, like others here, I preferred him in Out of the Furnace (2013).

It is nothing but Communist propaganda. Bale must have been desperate.

It was probably a co-production between a Chinese studio and a foreign (likely US studio) to bypass the strict quota that is set on foreign films entering and being released in the growing China box office market. China is the only market that can hypothetically bring in revenue anywhere close to the US box office.

reply

I thought it was an interesting companion piece to Empire of the Sun.

reply

Agreed, one of my favorite films of all time and I believe Bale does great justice to the foreign imprisonment roles.
