Why doesn't JB have the disease?

My hearing is dreadful and I can't make out what he says to CM over all the music and background news. All I caught was 'respiratory' and 'courtesy of the British Army'.

It's too cerebral! We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!

He was given the disease and they tested a cure on him. He thought he was cured and they let him out, but he still had it and was a carrier like Typhoid Mary in real life, Wikipedia it if you haven't heard.

I know the REAL reason from watching to the end - I couldn't make out what Jamie Bell said to Cillian Murphy in the beginning of the film.

ha ha ha! sometimes we americans have difficulty in understanding UK accents. subtitles are the best! 'the wind that shakes the barley' - with cillian - i had to use the subs thruout the movie. but well worth it! :)

thanks for telling the dialog here - it helps. thought it was a VERY powerful movie!

That was when he was still pretending to be working with/separated from his "unit." He never had a gas mask/containment suit. (I always watch British movies with the subtitles on.)

You really must turn on the subtitles because you seem to have missed a lot.

JB DOES have the disease. He's the primary carrier. The Army used him for scientific tests (he was given the choice of that or prison) and he escaped. Like many primary carriers, the disease remains somewhat dormant, in that he doesn't exhibit symptoms, but he carries the disease and it is infectious. Somewhat like Typhoid Mary, who killed many people with typhoid but didn't die of it herself (she lived a long life and died of pneumonia).

So, in case you didn't catch that, there is no outbreak of a virus outside of the island. The outbreak is INSIDE the cabin- i.e. inside JB. After giving the disease to his wife, he tried to isolate himself but didn't know there were people on the island. He held them captive to avoid them getting out and spreading it. He was self-quarantining.

I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. I am a fool.

It was right at the beginning of the film... not towards the end. It was literally a line he said in about the first 10 mins of his screen appearance! I watched the whole thing and 'got it', don't worry. I'm not a complete blond. I was watching the film, missed the line, rewound, rewound AGAIN, still couldn't make it out and thought I'd fire it off on IMDB in case it was important!

I worked with Jamie B on his first movie (Billy Elliot) and love his accent, just I'm hard of hearing and if something is said in a low or deep voice I have difficulty.

Don't worry mate, when it comes to this movie, everyone's hard of hearing. Watched with subtitles on from the moment Bell appeared.
