i read this:

Initially, the fact that Layla possesses a wonderful soprano voice which is the envy of the choir was daunting for Sarah.

"I thought, 'crikey, there's no way that my voice is up to the mark!', although in my head in the shower I'm Kiri Te Kanawa! When I went to meet everybody I made it very clear from the offset that I wasn't the sweet singing angel Layla is – and I gave my rendition of Mio Babino just to make sure everyone knew quite how dreadful I sounded!"

Luckily there was help at hand, from musical director Chris O'Hara and soprano Rachel Luxon.

"The production helpfully brought in the most beautiful voice of Rachel, and she became the voice of Layla. It was an acting challenge for me. I had to act as if I was producing the most exquisite sound the world has ever heard and in reality it was something very different! But I hope it worked and I think it has."

Of the main characters Laylas voice was supplied by my friend and neighbour Rachel Luxon. Chris O'Hara supplied both voices for Gilbert Tonks and Nemanja. Even though these two actors could actually sing themselves. I was a member of the choir (the youngish long haired blonde bloke at the back) and as such we all actually sang and recorded the music. Although I wasn't given ample time to learn one of my solos (I don't read music) so my voice was also ultimately recorded by someone else for a short sequence, although I actually sang live when filming (as did everyone else, including those who'd be dubbed later.

Was Sarah Lancashire's voice dubbed by someone else or is she singing herself, please? Esther's voice was more of a "jazz" voice than a classically trained voice and I loved listening to the little we heard of her singing.

And well done to whoever put together the arrangements for choir - Esther's choir, rather than Michael's - as each and every song was wonderful and a real joy to listen to. It's just a shame (a) that an official soundtrack hasn't been released and (b) that there wasn't a series 2 :(

That was Sarah Lancashire's voice. Chris O'Hara arranged and conducted both Esther and Michael's choirs. Colin Hanson-Orr co-arranged some of Esther's choir material.

As far as I recall we recorded whole sections of stuff which was ultimately not used. Would have been nice to have had a soundtrack CD with uncut material featured on it. I was part of Michaels choir and recorded predominantly with them but I also recorded with Esther's choir.

Wow, thank you for such a quick reply. Both choirs were fantastic but I'm a bit of a philistine and don't overly like classical, which is why I preferred Esther's choir to Michael's - and, of course, the story was written in such a way as to make us prefer Esther's choir! Well done to everyone involved, the arrangements and the singing were sublime.
