Funimation Dub or DBZ Kai Dub

so which dub was better?

reply

They're BOTH done by FUNimation btw.
The Kai dub obviously. No stupid script change, no ear-splitting Techno music, they replace the most horrid voices (Gohan, Freeza, Bulma, the Ginyu Force) with proper fitting voices. It isn't perfect, but it's miles better than their Z dub.

reply

The script is better and the acting is overall better however I disagree completely on the recasts. The actors that had to be replaced were far better than the crap ones they used for Kai. Like Monica Rial dear god I wish I could slap her.

JEFF : I hate Glee.
PIERCE : I'm not crazy about Glee either.

reply

What's so bad about Rial's Bulma? At least it doesn't sound like some over the top Californian valley girl.

reply

Her voice is shrill and shes not a good actor.

JEFF : I hate Glee.
PIERCE : I'm not crazy about Glee either.

reply

Why point out Monica Rial, who sounded great, compared to the abominable Colleen Clinkenbeard, who gave 18 a high-pitched, valleygirl princess voice? Man, I wanted to choke her.

reply

The only recasts that bug me are Piccolo and Popo...Piccolo had a gravelly voice but now it's just low. However, I much prefer kid Gohan's new voice...I didn't like how in the original dub it was the same as Kid Goku's

reply

Piccolo wasn't recasted, it's still Chris Sabat voicing him.

Though to be honest, they should've recast Piccolo. Out of a his three main roles, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Yamucha, I feel that Sabat's Piccolo had improved the least. It isn't bad but after 10 years it still feels like Diet Scott McNeil.

reply

Ah, well I don't like his performance in Kai nearly as much as the original one.

Also, while I don't have a problem with Bulma's new voice, it definitely is a lot less distinct than the old one.

reply

Hate Gohans fat kid kai voice its ok when he is younger but should have changed when he hit teen years it sounds to weak so lame, I really dislike bulmas it sounds so off even tho i do find the original one grating as well and I really hate 18's voice i know she is supposed to sound younger because what her age is but it simply sucks its really unnerving there are a few others like Jeice & i miss android 19's extra robot voice but what-evs

But i will say the dialogue is written so much better then the original it doesn't feel as dumbed-down plus being allowed to swear it feels way closer to the original Japanese tho i do miss certain great lines

Over all i think they did great work my only problem i have is with how they remastered kai in the first place it looks good in some ways but really cheap like a flash video in others by doing it the way they did the depth of quality degradation of everything was highly done the detail sacrificed throughout and even including some of the dumbest censorship ever like no hole or blood gushing out of goku from piccolo's beam through his & raditz chest lame

If anyone really loves DBZ you should check out both Team Four-stars DBZ Abridged Fan Parody which is extremely funny its great also check out Dragon Ball Z Kai Music Revival Selection its something truly amazing the amount of work and effort to bring the best audio mixes to create the perfect versions of the scores from Kikuchi, Faulconer , & Yamamoto

Check em out

You must have watched the censored Nick Toons version of Kai.
On the DVD sets the blood and holes are still there.

reply

While you are correct, compared to regular Z, Kai's uncut version is definitely censored. He's right about no blood coming out of Radditz when him and Goku were hit by the special beam cannon. Another instance I can think of is when Frieza skewers Krillin in his 1,000,000 power form, the way he tortures and plays with Krillin until he finally decides to let him go and dumps him into the ocean is completely cut out in Kai, though to be fair that could have been "filler", I wouldn't know. There are other instances of censored violence though.

reply

Haven't watched the Kai dub... I'm no purist but the ocean dub is the only dub I'll watch. Funi's just sounds too cartoony, like it's not taking itself seriously.

reply

How much of DBZ did the Ocean group do?

reply

They did episodes 1-68 (which was edited down to 53 episodes), and then returned to dub the show at episode 92 I think when Canada couldn't get the rights to air the Funimation episodes being produced in the United States. The Ocean group wanted to play catch-up so they skipped some episodes. Rather stupid on their part since now when the show airs in reruns in Canada, there's a whole arc portion that's not displayed. Frankly I wish Canada were able to get the rights. Having two English dubs of the show from different countries is quite confusing.

reply

Kai is the acting is better and it says true to the Japanese version

The recasts were awesome I loved Coleen as Gohan and Android 18(I think she was only a temporary replacement though since Meredith came back for Xenoverse and the last two movies).

Chris Ayres is the best Frieza,he actually sounds terrifying especially when Freiza kills Vegeta and Krillin,Ayres is one of the best voice actors around,I have seen him in lots of other anime, a truly talented voice actor

Todd Habkerkorn really surprised me as Android 19,he sounded creepy and robotic at the same time

The recasts happened because some of the voice actors in the first dub retired and Funimation has much more voice actors than they did back which was probably a couple dozen.
