Bummer -- where's the real Memphis?

I'm so disappointed that it's not being shot in Memphis, and none of the actors are from there. Sure, some of the actors are Southern, but none of them are likely to sound anything like the people that live there. I should know -- I was born and raised in Memphis. What a cheat!

reply

I'm pretty upset that its not being filmed in Memphis. They will have to shoot some scenes in Memphis though. Probably at least for the opening credits. hopefully, the show gets picked up.

But as far as the other point, DJ Qualls is from Manchester, Tennessee so that's only a couple hours away

reply

Where the hell do you live????? Manchester is a little over an hour east away from Nashville. Memphis is in addition about 3 hour west from Nashville. You do the math.........ain't no 2 hours from Memphis to Manchester.

reply

Aint no Memphis in this show.

reply

I'm not usually negative about stuff like this, but I have a feeling this thing won't last but a few episodes. And if they are stupid enough to set it in Memphis and then film it all in New Orleans, they deserve that. The two cities are very different and anyone who is familiar with either will spot it in a second. Shame on them, the cheap SOBs.

reply

Agreed. Which is sad since TNT has turned out some pretty decent shows.
But this looks so frickin cliche.

I guess we're lucky enough they actually show some people with A/C in their houses.

reply

The cities are practically the same, both populated by a lot of ethnics and it has a lot of crime.

reply

steiner444, have you ever been to either city?

reply

Yup.

New Orleans probably offered some really sweet tax breaks. Plus, it brings jobs to a city that's been hurting for too long.

I've never been to Memphis (and haven't been to New Orleans since about 1971) but I'm just happy that it's made in the American South and not in Canada. Or Romania.

reply

I've lived in Memphis my entire life, and in terms of the people, of the culture and lingo and general attitude, Memphis and New Orleans are very very similar.

reply

True. I'm from New Orleans and the first time I went to Memphis it looked exactly like New Orleans without the landmarks. But it really should have more Memphis shots in it. I just saw a commercial for it and the guy was on a streetcar in New Orleans. Is there a streetcar in Memphis?

I was watching you, Mockingjay. And you were watching me

All the corny Memphis cliches are in it, but it's obviously mostly
shot in New Orleans. I can't think of any neighborhood that really
looks as much like New Orleans as the shots in that show.

Having lived in Memphis during my young adult years, I am also disappointed that the show is not to be shot there. However, it boils down to the fact that Louisiana has put much effort into developing its film industry, and Tennessee has not. This is a shame, because Tennessee is a beautiful state with great geographic and architectural diversity.

So please answer. Are there street cars in new Orleans.

I apologize for grammatical errors- a side effect of IMDbing on my iPhone.

reply

Yes, there are streetcars in Memphis. There's a very nice ride
to be had down Main that then takes you along the river. Another
line runs from Main down a few miles on Madison to just past
Cleveland.

As for the show, I had to laugh when I saw the tall cranes of
the docks at New Orleans in the background during a scene on
a "Memphis" rooftop. They at least shot tons of external shots
on Memphis streets. Other than those the rest of the show was
filmed in the Algiers neighborhood, across the river from New
Orleans downtown and The Quarter.

I've lived in both cities and they are not all that similar,
especially if you lived in The Quarter. There might be a few
small similarities but both cities are very different at their
core. I like both but I'm partial to Memphis.

It's a shame to see the show canceled. I could have done without
"Dwight" singing every episode. It's like they tried to make him
into a modern day Elvis. At least that's what it felt like they
were trying to force. Should have focused on the crime stories.

reply

People are not crybabies when the show is called " MEMPHIS BEAT " and is not filmed in Memphis. I was born there and lived there for 2years from 2006-2008 and I can tell you it sucks they're not filming there. I wouldn't mind seeing jason lee walking through Beale St. dressed as Elvis. Or at a Redbirds game.

Hey, at least 48hrs was actually filmed inside and out of Memphis.

They only list the actors for 3-4 episodes so maybe it doesn't have a chance. The synopsis doesn't sound interesting enough.

Tons of shows are set in one place and filmed in another. You don't hear people from those places complaining. Get over yourselves. If your state, city, or municipality doesn't make it worth a studio's while to film there then it's never going to happen.

As a life long resident of Memphis, I can honestly say that after I post this, I'm getting up to do housework, while my wife watches this crap. I'm sure the story is well written, however....we don't talk the same way as the show makes it, the show isn't filmed here (as if we didn't say that enough), and there are many other shows on tv that have shown the real Memphis in a better light...like COPS and Policewomen of Memphis. LOL
This is just sad, to portray New Orleans as Memphis. N.O residents should be upset as well...

reply

//N.O residents should be upset as well...//

Why? Just because you guys take this seriously (which is really the first time I've ever seen this) doesn't mean everyone else has an inferiority complex like you guys do (they don't.)

You are all taking this way too personal. The are tons of movies and shows that aren't filmed where they're set, simma down.

True, but when the name of the city is in the title, it's to be expected that the city is to be just as much a part of the show as the characters are. Imagine if the outdoor scenes in Dallas were filmed in LA?

I'm just a patsy!

reply

Yeah, I'd rather they had been able to film it here in Memphis, but at least the music is good and they have done their homework - WHER! I give them points for that!

Yes, many shows are set in cities in which they're not shot. For example, Frasier was set in Seattle, but it could have been anywhere. The characters were rarely seen outside of an apartment, a coffee place, and a radio studio. Barney Miller was set in New York City, but all the action was inside the police station.

The inclusion of the name of a city in the title of a series implies that the city is almost as much of a character as any human actor is. The Streets of San Francisco and Miami Vice come to mind as examples. Both those series were shot in their respective cities. Memphis Beat "sounds" like it features the city, which means there at least ought to be some establishing shots of Memphis.

I'd much rather see a question like this on an IMDb forum than the "OMG Demi's so fat" threads on young actresses' forums.

Nothing in this show looks like Memphis, TN.
Anyone that visited or lived here for more than a week could see that.

NYPD Blue was filmed mostly in LA.

The Dallas miniseries that started in April 1978 was shot entirely on location in Dallas, Texas. Later, most interiors for the show were shot at the MGM studios in Hollywood, with exteriors being shot at the Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas, and other sections of Dallas, until 1989, when rising production costs led to all filming being relocated to California.

They shoot where it's cheapest to shoot. If TN couldn't offer them decent enough incentives that's TN's fault.

I love both cities, but I remain neutral. I'm living outside Nashville now. I caught the 3rd episode of this show last night just because it came on after Hawthorne. It was interesting enough, but I kept thinking every time they showed an exterior scene or extras and bit parts, I kept thinking, "Why do I feel like they're in New Orleans? It just kept bugging me until I checked it online today. I understand that it costs too much to film on location sometimes, but if a show is going to have so many exterior scenes, please make an effort to make it look authentic. If they want to continue to try to fool us, ease up on the street scenes. But I agree with most of the posters, if it's called "Memphis Beat", it should reflect the city they are portraying.

Another TNT show Leverage is set in Boston but is shot in Eugene, Oregon. Its better than all shows being shot in Canada.

reply

Leverage is actually shot in PORTLAND, Oregon. Slight difference.

There have been some establishment shots and 2nd unit shots of Memphis (i.e. shots of a car driving down a highway). I saw the pyramid, the waterfront, various downtown landmarks...I just hope they don't keep recycling those same shots over and over. :/
