Underrated.

I think this movie is very underrated. 5.1, seriously? Why?
I like the actors/actresses, it has a good storyline, and I like the chemistry between Jackie and Catherine.

Agreed. This film seems to be supremely underrated, which is a pity, because there is so much chemistry between the two leads and the film is shot quite beautifully.

i think one of the reasons why this film has a low rating it due to people's expectations. for one, the film does not have happy ending as the two lead character do not stay together. jackie is given the opportunity to reprise her role in her former sci-fi series neptune 26 to the big screen and it is a chance to return to acting...something she was passionate about but left due to the death of a close friend who i believe was her manager or agent. many former child stars are not given that opportunity to return to acting once they grow out of their cute stage or have become to old to continue the role they were so famous for. this offer also means she needs to be on location for the next year or so to shoot the movie, do interviews and promotional stuff for the film...not leaving much time for her relationship with catherine. but the two remain on good terms as friends and it is left that they will continue to be just that through an exchange of phone numbers and other forms of communication.
jackie is still a young adult and has not made any decisive decisions pertaining to her personal life. she stated that she had a romantic liason with another actress but remained mum on the topic as it would have caused a tabloid furor. she isn't prepared to be thrust into the spotlight or have her sexuality be the topic of gossip columnists. she happened to be attracted and fall in love with another woman which by no means should label her as a lesbian. the relationship is what it is...being portrayed as positive and rewarding.
indeed, the film is well written, acted and directed and should be seen by more people.

Neither of them were true lesbians, they both slipped in and out of relationships with men and women. Catherine looked like she might enjoy the guys company for the night after her fundraiser and Jackie looked as though she was satisfied with the guy she had sex with. On them staying together I feel Jackie was pushing but never really believed in it as hard as she tried. In fact they both at one point or another wanted to be with each other but kept changing there minds about it. In the end she was ok with them maybe hooking up in the future.

There was something that everyone seems to not recognize and it was a major age difference with the two women as they both had male lovers there own age and enjoyed there company as well as they did with partners there own age. Neither spoke hatred or disdain for men.

The low ratings may be of the movie never satisfies any particular group for it to have gotten a high mark from either sides of the isle, some wanted them together but did not get it, some wanted a straight lesbian film, but did not get it, some wanted sexual scenes, some felt it was perverted with the teacher and student, but there was no payoff, oh wait she did get fired. but you get my drift.

Yeah, I agree. I just saw this on Hulu and was shocked by how good it is.

I suspect some uptight soccer moms watched it, expecting some Lifetime Channel action and got their sphincters puckered by the "alternative lifestyle" aspect of the story, so that probably accounts for the low votes on here.

It's a great story and a very well made film, however.

I agree. This film is fantastic, the chemistry is some of the best I've seen yet. Shockingly low score, personally I think it's because of how realistic the film is - happy endings don't always go about. For me, it just made the film better.

yeah, i liked it alot too.

Been on a roll lately with similarly themed flicks on my kindle. Just watched this after two really well done french flicks (-much- more dramatic.. La Repetition and You Will Be Mine(I doubt that is the actual title in french)).

this was interesting in the way it was presented I thought. The directing and accompanying music kind of reminded me of either a weekly drama/sitcom, or an after school special!

I do think some of it was rushed. The scene where Catherine first hits on Jackie, she just walks up to her in a public area and kisses her... WTF?!? That and a few other things seemed pretty implausible. Plus I never fully understood what Jackie's deep anger against her mother was all about.

But, somehow it all worked tho.. like many have stated on here, i too wished the ending would have been a bit more 'satisfying'.. i think an ending shot of Catherine arriving in LA would have been nice, or something along those lines.

I like looking for the positives. The first time Jackie spends the night, Catherine shows a sensitive side asking if she is OK, asks if she wants to leave and says to tell her if she does want to leave. I have a similar memory from my younger days so this scene is rather touching.

Also, Jackie asking about Catherine's previous lovers perhaps trying to find where she stands; just another girl in her bed or is there something more happening, is it safe to get emotionally invested.

The scene where Jackie first blindfolds Catherine then takes he flying, helping Catherine face her fears and demons of losing her parents. This shows how close the two are becoming. This scene also shows Catherine letting her guard down and trusting Jackie. Catherine's is still holding some back, she can only talk about this being the best birthday ever, she really likes it when Jackie is here, and "I love you." when Jackie is asleep. I can so relate to that scene, it was beautifully portrayed.

You can almost see Catherine's heart break when Jackie tells her about the call from her agent and a Neptune 26 movie that is in pre-production. "I thought you were through with acting." then jumps up to pour a glass of wine because she knows what is coming, the first person she has been in love with in a long time (ever?) she is probably going to lose.

Sometimes you need someone to get past a heartbreak which is how I see Catherine's and Jackie's hooking up with a (lucky) guy. In the first study group on of the girls said Catherine "goes both ways" so maybe a bit of foreshadowing.

As for the ending, again a flashback. One last time to make up and end as friends. Catherine does not harbor ill feelings toward Jackie, nor Jackie towards Catherine. They embrace tearfully and Jackie returns to school, she has an interview in the morning and cannot stay the night. This is the only the movie could finish and be true to the characters. Catherine is independent and does not want the notoriety of being a Hollywood star's lesbian girlfriend. Jackie's life is just taking off as she has found her true calling is acting and it will be a while before she settles down. They will treasure the memories of each other.

The last scene Catherine is packing up her office when her assistant tells her about Jackie's interview outside the building. As Catherine watches from her office window it is almost like she is trying to memorize every detail of her lost love as this may be the last time she sees her. I know that feeling. Jackie glances back toward Catherine's office perhaps hoping for the same opportunity (did their eyes meet one last time?).

If a movie is supposed to arouse emotion in the viewer and empathy toward the characters this movie hit the mark. I can overlook the places where the plot is a little thin; it got us to the scenes that mattered.

I give this film a 8.0.
