They should have used Gary Mitchell instead of Khan

"Wrath of Khan" was a hommage and a sequel to the TOS episode "Space Seed".

If they really wanted to pay hommage to an old TOS episode ,like Nicholas Meyer did with "Wrath of Khan", they should have picked a different one, like the season 1 episode "Where no man has gone before".

Gary Mitchell would have been a great adversary for Kirk, and the story of this episode was quite compelling, too.

What do you think?

While I didn't mind then using Khan I agree that it would've been cooler had they used Gary Mitchell.

I posted my opinion on that. Now, I sall let those intelligent people do intelligent things (leading others into doing their own math exercises)...

The actor was just wrong for Khan, hes a decent actor but Khan was not a white guy.

Actually, at the same age, the Ricardo Montalban looked like Benedict Cumberbatch.

Come to think of it, a dark villain over a darkness story....
Technically, it would have been hard to tell first plan from backgrounds, would it not ?
This reminds me the comments when John Byrne draw a fight between harfang and some white foe, in a sandstorm.... over more than one page (the lazy fellow !!!) (Or that was from one She Hulk comics ?)
Ps About the likeness between the two actors, I suggest "latin lover".

Cumberbatch is British, Gary Mitchell is an American character. Cumberbatch also bears little resemblance to Gary Lockwood.

If I was working on the production and they had cast Cumberbatch, and they needed him to be a existing Star Trek villain, I would have rewritten the role to be either Garth of Izar or Dr. Tolian Soran.

Gary Mitchell would have been an excellent choice. Done well it could be a top notch sci fi horror.

What we got instead was a cheesy knock off of wrath of khan with none of the emotional intensity.

It would have been interesting to have Gary Mitchell in this movie.

If Cumberbatch was just a new augment named Harrison it would have been a lot better. There was pretty much no need to make him Khan. Heck, you could probably just make a few minor edits to the movie (remove the scene with Old Spock, remove the "My name is Khan" line, remove the Kirk death scene, redub "Khan" with "Harrison" when people talk) and the movie would become a lot better.

I still enjoyed it, but deciding to make Harrison into Khan was pointless and only served as a distraction from the main plot of the film.

remove the Kirk death scene
