Cheating husbands

Was there a particular reason why cheating was part of the movie's underlying theme? She cheated w/ married guys and it was brought up more than once how much guys cheat.

I think this is a good point. I'm guessing the cheating men was part of a larger theme that men wouldn't ever support her. Remember her father said he couldn't provide, and slapped her. Her Jimmy apparently went away. The loan officer wasn't on her side and neither was the real estate agent. I would take from all this that the only way she was going to get what she needed (a home) was on her own.

Nice insight. Thanks!

It's also a matter of status. For the men, having a mistress is a status symbol. For her, it was all about getting the right home. Both are ultimately empty pursuits.

Right, and the cheating adding to a general sense of amorality that pervades the film. The idea may also have been to elevate her goal, which was not about money or status, and make her seem less shallow than the people around her.

I saw it as her needing a place to stay. Although we saw her pay for the hotel room in the beginning, this might have been a way to have a place to stay for the night, on multiple nights.

Once she owned her home, she no longer needed him and walked away from him telling her "all the hotels are full.".

We've met before, haven't we?
