Tasteless film.

This film only succeeded in displaying the most inane, impossible ways to die. Yet it still tried to be a sappy drama justifying the murders with some childhood dream *beep*

The deaths in this film are a bit over the top...but only slightly more so than those "puzzles" in the Saw series. And as for the so-called "childhood dream crap", I think they're trying to show how hopes and wishes--complicated by personal tragedies and a very tense political climate--could drive someone into an irrational murderous rage.

And that this could be a never-ending cycle.

I just found it tonally uneven.

Given the subject matter I was expecting a darkly humorous film, but instead we get earnest drama punctuated by some really nasty murder scenes that linger on prolonged deaths, and then thrown into that mix there's occasional, incongruous comedy. It's like they couldn't decide if it was a serious film or not.

I do think some of the killings had gratuitous elements that were really unpleasant, but I had to laugh at the bedroom killings.

Wow,you nailed it. Great review!

One sad thing is that there is good film-making here. It is not a cheap production at all. The problem is the subject matter and plot. There is nothing of redeeming quality. There are no good people/characters. Selfishness and exploitation is rampant and it is excessively gory. Even the crimes, although "successfully" pulled off, do not achieve their ultimate purpose as the housing crisis kicks in. What is the point to it all?

i liked the social commentary, hated the movie... honestly felt ripped off at the end. but it did have me thinking about lower class japan, so thats something.

reply

It's set in Hong Kong.

If those that feel entertained by this do not question why they do not find a pregnant woman with a suction bag over her head being suffocated whilst having a miscarriage as wrong on a very fundamental level then there`s obviously something missing within themselves mentally. If this is what is now called entertainment there`s definately something gone wrong with us. `Inside` was another film that disgusted me and had similar vile and sick scenes of a pregnant woman being murdered in the most violent ways imaginable. The extensive lingering where the suffering was greatest was also very questonable. I have been a major collector of horror movies for decades but this wasn`t a film to be entertained by, it was a glaring statement about how sick an audience we have become in our desensitized world where the butchering of bodies and the intense suffering of victims has become a piece of `fun`. This is not horror, this is porn for the mentally unstable.

go watch tesis your hipocrisy needs that movie. You watched both movies didnĀ“t you? the inside and dream home? or did you stop the moment you saw those actions?

reply

You are a complete fool to consider hypocrisy as you do. You show too well a lack of intellect and understanding. Would I turn my face away, reject my own witnessing of disturbing events once they are thrust into my field of vision? Would I be as likely to stick my head in the sand and pretend these things are not occuring, that they have not been created on screen? Only a coward turns away, only a coward averts their eyes whenever confronted with events distasteful to them and their sensitivities. I will be witness to the `horrors` if you will, because it`s every persons duty to witness their world as it presents itself to us. Something cannot be understood by running away from it. To gain a fuller understanding of this world and what makes people tick you need to put your mind and sight often where it is disagreeable to ones own sensitivities, unless of course you wish to live in a box where your world view only consists of whatever fits into your tiny one dimensional mindscape. For the sake of arguing you will still argue with me on this point, but you will do so in the knowledge that I am correct, and that shows exactly where you are in your `development` intellectually. You need to think more, and posture less.

of course it's completely tasteless and over-the-top, but i thought it worked extremely well both as a satirical black comedy and as a character-driven thriller. didn't find it all "sappy", nor did i think that the murders were in any way justified. honestly the best slasher movie i've seen in ages.

9/10

I agree. The film is sick with it's lingering death scenes. It's also boring as hell.

stupid people will see the character motivation as thematically acceptable explanation for the ridiculous killings. intelligent people will see it as a lazily written excuse to film simulated killings in a cheap attempt to shock the audience. for the most part, they fail, since it becomes so outlandish as to be comedic.
