In what year/decade was this meant to be set?

I wondered in what year this movie was set. There was no technology available and Rebecca's mobile phone looked ancient. In this day and age surely she would have just googled the hotel and Ernessa online and would have found out about her death. In fact I found the constant hints of Ernessa's past and no interest from anyone frustrating. The English teacher described Rebecca as intelligent but she just didn't use her supposed brains to find truth.

It's modern day. In the beginning, Becca asks if Lucy broke up with her boyfriend by Facebook.

also, some private schools don't allow mobiles, computers etc as they could be a distraction from their education and be misused

The book is set sometime in the 1970s, as it came out in the early 2000s and the narrator says that years (25-30, I can't remember exactly) have passed since the events she proceeds to describe via the diary she kept when she was at school.

Obviously, the lack of technology was not so conspicuous in the book, knowing that. But updating the movie to the present day, it's a little harder to get around. But even so, I never found it distracting.
