Janet was the weak link here.

I think the role would have been much better if Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams (either one of them), Angela Bassett, Queen Latifah or Theresa Randall had played Janet's role instead. IMO, Janet is about as poor an actress as she is a singer.

I have to agree, but I thought she did okay. Janet played a woman who was clearly out of touch with many of the realities of the community and that fit her perfectly. She had me laughing when she was in the car waiting for her assistant before the sad event. She was like "Where the F is she"? Or, maybe it was the way Tyler Perry cut the film? I just found it funny. Kimberly was the strong link in this movie---what an amazing actress.

What do you mean that it fit her perfectly? I thought that she did a good job, but since the OP brought up Queen Latifah & Angela Bassett, it would have been interesting to see either of them in the role.

Janet had her moments where she was bad, ok and good but never great. I think the best lead performances in this film were given by Kimberly Elise, Anika Noni Rose, Phylicia Rashad and Loretta Devine (though Devine pretty much played the same character she's been playing for the last 15 years.)

I could not see Halle Berry playing any character in this film. She'd come off as inauthentic as Thandie Newton.

Vanessa Williams and some of the others listed in the initial post would have been good choices.

I disagree with the OP the Janet Jackson hate on this board is too much! Janet did a good job I was impressed. I liked Janet's transformation from a bitchy businesswoman to a woman that realizes due to her social location she should help other black women. The negativity towards Janet on this board is cruel and unfair. I believe people hate Janet because she's such a huge international pop star. I personally felt that Janet's scene with her down low husband was excellen. The anguish, pain, and anger, was right on her performance was good.

Yeah I'm a huge Vanessa Williams fan but I don't want to see her in a Tyler Perry movie. I would be like watching Lena Horne star in a film directed by Ed Wood.

The character ,who wasn't in the played didn't need to be in the film. I thought she was basically playing the same character from "Why Did I Get Married? I&II.

I never saw the play. Someone who was talking about the film after I saw it and had also seen the play told me during our conversation that her character wasn't in it. Now knowing that I still say she played the part the same way as her role in the other film. So now I have to go back and find out what the Red lady was like in the play.

The character that wasn't in the play was the cop. TP wanted to add a positive male role so as to avoid accusations of man bashing.

She by far wasn't the strongest link, which is extremely difficult to do in the presence of Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, and Kimberly Elise who are phenomenal strong very gifted actresses.. But I think Janet having the least experience did a very fair job, she's definitely promising.. You can tell she was very passionate and dedicated to her role and took it very seriously. Janet has said in interviews that acting was her first start in the business IE penny on good times.. it was also her passion and love and she felt it was stolen from her because her father Joe wanted her to be in the music industry.. NOw she feels as though she's fulfilling her primary dream as an actress. She's gone thru some rough times recently and I think she's done BOTH Tyler Perry movies justice.. WDIGM 2 and FCG.. WAY to go JANET.. AKA MISS JACKSON IF YA NASTY.. lol

I totally agree. It's obvious that Tyler Perry has a crush on Janet, even if he is a gay man. The same way gay men love Bette Milder. I believe Janet was chosen strictly for some misdirected "crush" and box office draw, which was a mistake on his part. I'm sure this is part of the reason it didn't hit number 1.

Angela Bassett would have been perfect in this role.

Nicole Ari Parker as the woman in Red. Anyone who has seen the television series "Soul Food" knows what I'm talking about, she played the older sister, strong minded lawyer Terry. Janet was OK. Nothing earth shattering.

I disagree. Janet is a great actress, and she was great in the movie!!!

reply

Agreed. I found nothing wrong with her work in this film.

I don't get the Janet bashing either, I thought she was very strong in here, that scene where she's talking to her husband on the bed was a great scene and I loved her performance. I do think that the other more stronger acting in this film eclipsed it, Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Kerry Washington & Thandie Newton were very good but I think Janet still held her own.

Janet's performance just seemed dead to me, so uninspiring. It might have something to do with the type of character she was portraying ,but there seemed to be no passion behind her eyes to me , no type of excitement. You can play a bitchy, uptight businesswoman without coming off as plain uninterested.

The industry dont give a *beep* about you, but it couldn't make a dime without you

there seemed to be no passion behind her eyes to me

That's because her Passion is dancing and that's evident when you see her eyes and face light up when she dances. Unfort for her, She is now in her Mid 40's and even though she still is able to dance very well. She is not marketable anymore in the Dance/music world due to her age.

I think she is a good actress but I have noticed in her recent films. She seems to lack something. I can't pinpoint what it is. There is no doubt that she can be a great actor as she was amazing in Poetic Justice and did really well in her earlier works. I don't know if it's the roles she is choosing, tyler perry's direction or what. But just seems like her acting performances aren't as good as her earlier works.

reply

I'd go w/ Angela out of all the actresses that you named.

Perry is a Janet whore. He loves her and enjoys putting her in his movies. That's all it is. She's beautiful and fine as wine, but I agree, she's not a good actress at all and always seems to be playing the same business-like, no nonsense, non-emotional characters to cover up her acting flaws.

reply

I thought Janet did pretty good. But yeah, when it comes to playing the ultimate bitch role, Vanessa Williams has it down cold. I love her!!!!

reply

Vivica A. Fox or Robin Givens are my choices. The fact that being a "b" is so forced for her is a credit.
