I never understood why

Celeste was divorcing Jesse. I know he was a dreamer, but he was sweet and loving to her always. They weren't hurting for money.

I thought that she handed her soulmate over to another woman for no reason.

Neither did I. I guess she got tired of having to take care of him, in the sense that she paid for everything. She probably wanted him to be able to hold his own, and become a good example for their future children. That is the only reasoning that I can come up with. I agree though that she let him get away.

? Jesse had no money or motivation to obtain any.

No, money is not everything, but it's also the cause of many (probably most) divorces. Imagine what it would be like to pay for EVERYTHING while your spouse spends their time watching reruns of the Beijing Olympics. It's going to lead to issues.

But as Jesse said, Celeste kind of preferred it that way. She liked being in the driver's seat of the relationship ... that sort of dynamic may work in HS/college, but for adults it's going to result in a lot of tension.

"Sweet and loving" isn't enough to make a good husband and eventually father. Jesse was immature, lazy, unmotivated, irresponsible, jobless, and basically a total manchild. That's not husband material. That's a boy who needs to grow up.

reply

Because she was enabling his worst tendencies and that is not okay. It needed to happen.
