Pretty good film in it's own right

But I still don't see the point of remaking a film they got right at the first attempt and I guess it proves how good John Wayne was in the original. The ending was a bit grim - I assume truer to the book but sad and perhaps empty.

Hailie saved the movie.

I do agree with you, no point in remaking a film that was good the first time. I would like to see remakes of movies that weren't so good but could be improved upon. That would be a lot more interesting than remaking good or even great films. Like the remake of Psycho. Damn, that remake is such garbage. It's so bad that it almost ruins the original film.

And yeah, I think both John Wayne and Jeff Bridges were good. In fact, I would have a hard time choosing who was better.

For me John Wayne is better in the role - not because he's a better actor, it's just he made the role his own a long time ago (if that makes sense).

It's a great film and I say that as a really big fan of the original. I think both have value and I'm glad they did it. A lot of why they probably decide to remake it was the tone of the original source material in contrast with the Hathaway version.

Yes, I think I've learnt that from other threads - I'm going to have to read the book now - or at least add it to my list.
