Ending goes a little too far (SPOILERS)

A day after seeing this movie, I find myself still thinking about the story, characters, and what it all means. However, one thing that stands out is the ending. I liked the part where Hesher got father and son to go for a "walk" with Grandma. But the speech leading up to that point seemed a little forced, like the writer/director was trying really hard to stay in edgy, punk territory by making sure Hesher was as obnoxious as ever.

I get that this wasn't supposed to be some type of Hollywood-ish transformation, which I agree would have been ridiculous. But c'mon, swigging a beer, threatening people, and then of course (in typical rebel fashion) throwing the beer can against the wall at the end? Isn't it possible that Hesher could have had just a little more humanity at that moment? He had already revealed it before. Again, it just seemed like someone was trying a little too hard to maintain some sort of indie credibility.

I think they were just trying to keep Hesher as Hesher. It was a purposely ridiculous speech, evidenced by the reactions in the crowd. But it was perfectly in character.

I have somewhat similar feelings about the ending. What came after the speech and throwing the beer was even more of a let down.

I had nothing against they going for a walk with the coffin but the slow motion and choice of music was just too much. To top it all there's a middle finger pointing at you when the credits started.

Too bad, this movie had great moments.

A movie doesn't go the way you want it and it's a letdown?

reply

No, it's the film makers choice _how_ to present their idea that was a let down.

And again a thread raving from someone who didn't connect the dots.

The speech was a little forced? He was doing this metaphore, where dad and son had to realize they lost a beloved one, but still have another.

He made this type of speeches once or twice before. Everytime sounding ridiculous, but in the end pefect metaphores.

The let down usually isn't in the script/ director of a movie, it is in the boards.

lokis_angels right on.

I thought at first the speech was too stupid and out of place, but then after thinking it through I understood the metaphor about the nut. First my reaction was "WTF", this is so misplaced, then I laugh and finally my throat started to hava a knot.

Great movie all the way.
