Good movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt nailed this role

The acting in this movie was great. Joseph played his role really well. I didn't think it was possible to make Natalie Portman ugly but this movie did a good job on trying. It wasn't until she was wet in the pool that she looked good.

Totally agree, JGL was amazing in this and I thought Rainn wilson was really good aswell, he should get more recognition for this film.

I agree. He seems to be really good at playing violent characters - Manic, anyone? His performance in that film was intense. Also, I don't know if they were trying to make her "ugly" per se. Judging by those glasses that no one would wear as a prescription and her clothing style, I figured she was meant to be a typical hipster.

I agree. The lead made a great junkie. I didn't recognize him at first, but even when I did, it didn't change anything about his acting. The same goes for Natalie Portman. The glasses threw me off in her first scene(though I actually thought she looked good in them) but aftewards knowing who she was didn't matter. Good movie overall. I like seeing big stars in offbeat movies like this.

Was he a junkie? Did I miss something?

reply

Well, he was very offbeat. More so than the other characters.

Agreed that he did a good job as well. Perhaps one of the better roles I've seen him in. I think it's safe to say he'll be around for a while.

Believe me it is possible, i know everyone has their own taste but to me she is unattractive (no body whatsoever the jean shot when she got out of the car when she hit that guy) explains that perfectly.

reply

I didn't find her unattractive in the movie at all. Not sure they were even going for that, just poor maybe.

I will be the lone dissenter here. I like JGL tremendously (though lately he's been going the Johnny Depp corporate blockbusters/big paydays route too often). Mysterious Skin...his best performance imo. But this film, I can see why it appealed to him...the chance to stretch and try a new road. But his performance is too strenuous, "actorish" and a tad obvious for me. I can see the strings so to speak. I can see Oz behind the curtain. He tries too hard in many scenes. More subtlety can be achieved (even for a loud explosive personality as Hesher). Portman was even worse imo. Her clothes made her look like a Mama's Family castmate. I totally didn't buy her trying to submerge herself into her role. The silly wardrobe drag made it even more unintentionally comical for me. Rainn Wilson was good as was the boy and the pro's pro Piper Laurie. Sorry to say that on many levels Hesher didn't light my candle.

Agreed. JGL did a fantastic job!!!
