I know I'll get sh!t on by everyone but I just thought I'd voice my opinion, in hopes of at least one person agreeing. If you don't, feel free to voice yours, but please don't attack, it's just an opinion.

I wish they'd have picked another band to base the logo, character and much of the music on. In my opinion, Metallica is not metal. Hard rock at best. So apart from his actions, Hesher should have been portrayed more badass, being a fan of actual metal. There were other names kicked around in the film and same goes for the score, but the emphasis was on Metallica.

Just because a band puts the word metal in their name, doesn't make it so. There is a lot of music out there and again, in MY opinion, Metallica is hardly heavy, let alone metal.

So many other bands could have worked better and given Hesher a better edge.

Alright, I'm ready for whatever replies you may have. And I'm not interested in listing the metal I know and love so don't ask. "Oh yeah? What do YOU think is metal?" will derail the topic. I just want to see if people agree.

Metallica was absolutely heavy metal through Justice.

Then the Black album came out and they became Selloutica.

Then they cried, went to therapy, and made a DVD of it.

This 'realization' is irrelevant in/to my opinion. Just like other opinions who say Metallica is metal, to me, are irrelevant. I won't suddenly think they're metal because some one who doesn't reply to my post yet is obviously directing their post at me, says so either.

No matter who he's modeled after and what kind of music they create, I wish they'd have picked a metal band.

So you think that people should base the characters in their films on your opinions?

Arguing Metallica wasn't one of the bands that created metal seems a hard point to prove. Is Sabbath metal then?

Of course! I've stated that 1000 times! Ugh...

I couldn't care less who the F pioneered what was called 'metal' either. ALL I'm stating is that there's a lot out there, and Metallica is TAME as *beep* Stop putting words in my mouth, and please read previous posts. I'm not going to start listing sh!t.

He wasn't listening to Load or St. Anger. It was strictly stuff from the first 4 albums, which is about as metal as you can get. Sure, there is heavier stuff out there, but Metallica is a classic band and the songs fit the tone of the film.

Well it's evident that you haven't heard Metallica before the Load album, because they are the definition of metal. Yes, there are bands that are heavier, but Metallica IS metal. They're part of the big 4. Which (if you didn't know) are the 4 thrash METAL bands from the 80s. You can have your opinion all you want and thats fine, but if you think Metallica isn't (or never was) metal, you are wrong.

Just some advice, before you put the time in to make a post and try to back up your argument, you should make sure you know all of the facts, because it doesn't come off right. Just some friendly advice.

NOT METAL?!?!?!?!? Man, GTFO of here with yer crazy bullsh**. Metal-Pioneers, they were! Metallica didnt invent metal, but they may have perfected it.

Besides, they only played classic Metallica in this film, which was VERY metal. Its not like some sh** from St. Anger was on the soundtrack

Of course there are heavier bands out there. there are like 100 different genres of metal too. thrash, death, black, gothic, power, etc.

BUT as other posters have said, the first 4 Metallica albums were METAL and there is simply no arguing that. They DEFINED metal.

Also lets not forget the draw of MEtallica. They are mainstream, so there is a lot of people that recognize and like their music. It was pretty much the entire reason I watched this film because of all the metallica in the trailer, it intrigued me.

And now that ive watched it i can say that the only real good thing about this movie was all the metallica. It had it's funny parts for sure. And i identified with the loss of their mother and grandmother. But it was a pretty boring movie for the most part.

Hershers look and the logo are a throwback to the mid/late 80s. Bascially without even having the character say a word or do anything, some of us can not only get a idea of the characters basics, but recognize that the film maker is paying homage.

Metal fans arent really like Hesher anymore. They listen to NuMetal and wear walk around in Rapgear. Hesher is right out of 1986, van and all.
