Not in the literal sense of these terms, but metaphorically.
As in Hesher = He-She. The character possesses qualities and traits from both genders and I don't see him as a person but rather as a representation of the Bicameral Mind.

shareI agree with this. I do believe Hesher was a projection or a metaphor representing the pain and the process of grieving. But, yeah, Hesher couldn't have been more male.
