Is Hesher the personification of Metal?

He seems to be what you'd expect from the raw, unedited physical manifestation of Heavy Metal music. He seemed a bit stereotypical the first time I watched it, but on a second viewing I realized he's actually unique. No one could be like Hesher because he's not human, he's Metal in human form.

What do we get from Metal? A sense of freedom? Power? Do you feel alive, empowered, headstrong, rebellious etc when you listen to it? Does listening to it help you throw off the chains of society? Do you feel unstoppable when you're riding the lightning? I do.

But it's all in my head. If I could bring it all out I'd be Hesher. But no one can do that.

Thrash metal, yes.

I'm female, from the U.K and got into metal when I was about 9. No-one would ever have been aware I was a metal fan. I went through a bit of a black clothes phase when I was 11. Metallica were my favourite band for years & Lars Ulrich was my first proper crush (before I was aware he was a douche) I liked metal because of the melodies & lyrics. I never felt like I was rebelling. I always preferred bands who wrote and played what they wanted & can't really explain why but I absolutely loved the scene. I have never felt more at ease than at a metal gig. Metal fans, in my experience, are awesome people... This film & its soundtrack were ace!!!

You didn't realize Lars Ulrich was a douche the very first time you heard him speak?

Musta been a big crush.

Hesher = entropy

He brings randomness and destruction wherever he goes. He has no particular direction. He's "change" personified.

That being said, the eulogy was the most epic in movie history!

That's kind of how I saw it too. Hesher is chaos and lack of reason. He embraces a lack of humanity and has an affinity for the random. The OP's idea kind of works too though, in the sense that metal makes you feel empowered and able to to whatever you want all the time, like Hesher does.

I think more than anything he's everything the kid wanted to be/do at that moment in time (mom's death, dad's apathy, school life sucks, etc), but couldn't. He's that part of the brain that wants vengeance and has no remorse...
