So did I miss something?

When the angry evil guy caught up with the decoy and threw a stick through the runner, why didn't just the guy in the cart jump out and shoot him? He was given the gun by the guy with glasses right?

Edit: in fact he did have it the second time the evil guy caught up, so why didn't he just shoot him earlier?

I get that he had to keep the assassins occupied for a certain time, but that wouldn't stop him from just poking out at shooting the guy who was killing his friends, besides after the bad guy threw the stick through the cart and into the runner he had a hole which he could shoot out of with no chance of being seen. Else he could just have given the gun to someone who had seen how things looked out there and he could have shot, i.e. the guy with the glasses.

This movie sets in 1905, and the kid in the movie is supposed to be just 17 yrs old. Most kids in HK/China back then probably didn't even know how a hand gun looked like, much less how to operate one. He is also just a student with no military/martial arts training, so obviously he's scared to harm anyone even if it's in self-defense, especially if you consider how even modern-day policemen who are properly trained would be scared when they get into a gun fight w/ criminals.

Chen (the guy with glasses) hands the kid the gun probably out of guilt of putting his good friend's son in danger, so he tries to do anything possible to keep him safe, no matter how minor it is, but I doubt he thinks realistically the gun's gonna be effective at all.
