Other cancelled shows that got picked up? I need hope!

Just wondering if any shows in the distant past were scrapped only to be picked up and sucessful at another network? I need some hope here. LOL

reply

The only one I can think of is Southland. Got cancelled by NBC & picked up by TNT. Its going to air in a couple of weeks.

I would really love if another network picked up Eastwick. Such a good show.

Medium went from NBC to CBS. Although Scrubs hasn't been a major success, it went from NBC to ABC.

The biggest one was JAG. NBC canceled it after 1 year. CBS picked it up, made one main cast change and it ran for 9 more seasons and produced two successful spinoffs.

All too often when another network picks up a canceled show it waits until mid season to start airing it so it never picks up steam. On the rare occasions when they start airing it right away it normally has better results.

If a man speaks in the forest and no women is there to hear it is he still wrong?

The Jack Benny Program (NBC & CBS)
My Three Sons (ABC & CBS)
Diff'rent Strokes (NBC & ABC)
Taxi (ABC & NBC)
Stargate SG-1 (Showtime & SciFi)
Baywatch (NBC originally, came back in first run syndication)
Original Pilot movie for Law & Order ran on CBS but they decided not to pick it up for a series. NBC grabbed it up and it's been on 20 years now with many spin-offs.
Mama's Family (2 years on NBC then first run syndication)
Get Smart (4 seasons on NBC, 5th season on CBS)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Cancelled by WB and picked up by UPN)
Father Knows Best (NBC and CBS)

I go online sometimes, but everyone's spelling is really bad. It's...depressing.

Wow, rycki1138, that really gives me hope!

I just wanted to add that Family Guy was canceled, but due to the fan response of the DVD sets, it was brought back, on the same network, no less.

Thanks guys. I feel a lot better. not ready to give up hope :)

Plus in recent years, there’s been several shows (pretty much just serials as opposed to episodics) that were cancelled, but due to viewer pressure were brought back for one more season to wrap things up in a more amenable manner such as Roswell and Jericho. Or other shows that were cancelled, but given the courtesy of a few wrap-up episodes that would air in the summer or something (whether the shows did or not, they were given the opportunity), such as Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, Life on Mars, Daybreak, The Nine, Six Degrees, Alias (all on ABC), Black Donnellys, Kidnapped, Journeyman (on NBC), Vanished, Prison Break—for some reason—Lost, Arrested Development (FOX).

Of course that shouldn’t get your hopes up too much since for each on of those, there were other serials that were cut without a proper end like Sarah Connors Chronicles, Crusoe, My Own Worst Enemy, Stargate: *, My Name is Earl, Drive, Heist, Reunion, Windfall, Studio 60, Threshold, Invasion, Surface, Privileged, Reaper.

SCC, MNiE, and Reaper, really needed another season.

Reunion was so good!

Does Buffy really count? It wasn't actually canceled, Buffy was always meant to die and come back. A risky move indeed but the huge marketing campaign to shout that she would be back saved them. I believe the 2 channels were related somehow? I'm not sure, cannot remember to be honest but I'm 98% sure it wasn't a case of being canceled and picked up elsewhere.

I only today decided to watch Eastwick, my brother-in-law mentioned loving it when it was first on and I forgot about it until now but I bloody LOVED it! I watched every episode in one go and then found out that it was canceled. Which is the story of my life with TV shows I love. Sarah Connor, Dollhouse, Medium, Hyperdrive, Nighty Night, Dead Like Me kind of counts, Spaced and I'm sure there's more but I cannot remember any for the life of me. I hate it when good shows get canceled and we so rarely get a decent ending either. We either get forced or sped up ending that feel forced (Medium, Dollhouse, Dead Like Me) or we get cliff hanger endings or one's where everything just stops without explanation (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I need to stress that Sarah Connor is the emperor of shows canceled before their time and with horrible horrible horrible horrible endings).

Buffy. From the defunct WB to UPN.

Also it's a must for mentioning... The Beautiful Life which was a CW show got canceled because it didn't have lots of viewers, since it was showing at the same time as Glee etc & there was no hope for it to come back on The CW. They aired just 2 episodes & stopped filming it. At least 7 episodes were recorded, & it was rumored that in other country they will be shown. But, a few weeks ago Ashton Kutcher got a even better plan, to work with HP & YouTube where they uploaded ALL the episodes of The Beautiful Life: http://www.youtube.com/user/TBL Ashton Kutcher said if the show becomes popular enough on YouTube, it could be even revived! So, there's always a hope.

Sorry but you got that wrong

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Cancelled by WB and picked up by UPN)

Buffy wasn't really cancelled. FOX, the studio that actually produced the show (and approached Whedon to turn the concept of the movie into a TV series in the first place) sold it to UPN. The WB wasn't willing to pay higher salaries ect. and during that negotiation dispute, UPN jumped in and outbid The WB so it landed on their network. Roswell (another FOX show) was cancelled by The WB at that time, but FOX persuaded UPN to take it as a package deal together with Buffy. So UPN did not only take one but two shows AND was willing to pay more money. That is why Buffy landed on UPN. It actually was The WB's 3rd highest rated show and they wouldn't have cancelled it. They just didn't want to pay more money.

The Beautiful Life was abysmal, and did not deserve to be commissioned, let alone picked up for a second season!

reply

That would be nice. Scifi would have been a logical choice but Scifi is a joke when it comes to its shows. I would have followed this show whatever channel it came on.

reply

I also wondered why the CW didn't pick it up. It is filmed on the original set of Gilmore Girls so it can't be THAT expensive. They hardly have special effects and simply could have mad it a bit 'smaller' (not as many extras ect.).

reply

i still think about this show all the time, i'm guessing there probably isn't much hope now that so much time has passed, i just don't understand how people didn't love this show???

"it's the other way around Toby. We happened to you."

reply

People i've talked to think the movie was awesome and that the show was a disgrace to the movie. I liked them both.
