Good movie but it seemed unrealistic

I saw this movie because I was curious to see what Abdellatif Kechiche is like as a director. It's a good movie, well made, but it felt like it requires suspension of disbelief. I'm not familiar with the story of the real-life woman who was known as "black venus" and I don't doubt that she was exploited, but it seemed like some aspects of her life as a sideshow performer were embellished a bit for this movie. Also, the movie was too long (2hrs 45 mins). But it's a good movie nonetheless.

She was indeed exploited as a slideshow attraction as many people in the areas where they traveled had never seen a black person up close and especially bc of her physique she was even more of an oddity.

@bd74, someone being exploited seems unrealistic to you? No offence but what world are you living in? She was exploited and many people like yourself are complete unknown to her story. Her story should be taught in history classes so people can really see and understand the horrors of slavery and hatred.

A lot of movies embellish. Read a work of non-fiction instead.

This is supposed to be biography aka nonfiction. Also kind of slanderous unless this woman really did spend all day smoking and drinking like one of those depraved domesticated chimps

She was unhappy so I can imagine why she would be smoking and drinking all the time to numb it all down, I don’t find it slandering.
