Did the ending kill it for anyone?

Without giving it away... I'll still put the spoiler alert on... The ending was horrible. I actually loved the movie. The first 5 minutes didn't seem to fit as far as film quality with the rest. But once the kid was on the farm with the grandparents, it became a very engaging fantasy trip. I remember something like this done in the movie "The reflecting skin", a mix between what was the child's imagination and what was sinester things were actually happening.

So, I really did enjoy it. Not sure if anyone noticed, but the movies granny was watching, "Carnival of souls" and "Night of the living dead", later matched scenes in this movie.

Then there was the ending... You just couldn't get a lamer ending then this.

Thoughts?

The ending could have been better, but it was more true to life. Unless you're referring to the stick thrown at the camera. I liked that. Makes you wonder if all the hippie chicks were rounded up, or if the field had ghosts. who knows.

I see everyone's point here, but I think the ending had to be that way, since obviously (SPOILER FOLLOWING) the grandfather's role would not have been kept so creepy. I hope that makes sense I hate having to put the so-called twist here for non-viewers. So technically the ending wasn't lame in my opinion, just disjointed.

Huh?

wait, what? did this movie have a twist that I missed? I just finished this film and maybe I slipped into unconsciousness from sheer lack-of-plot but I never noticed anything I would call a twist, and I never noticed grandpa being creepy. Honest (non-sarcastic) question: can someone please explain what they see as the twist ending to me?

To be fair, the movie had lots of odd little scenes that I enjoyed as they were unfolding...but in the end I found the film dissatisfying because they never wove those scenes together into any kind of plot. Just a random assortment of strangeness, tied together by Cloris Leachman swearing and eating without swallowing her food.
