Will this be the first 'big' Finnish film internationally?

I'm finnish, and I think it would be very cool if this film would be known all over the world.. I don't know about if there's many US show dates in big theaters or anything anywhere?

I don't see this taking America by storm. American cinema-goers are very fickle, and this will most likely be playing in smaller theaters like arthouse cinemas and places of the like.

Though every year, there's always at least 1 film I see that I think is really great but I know the vast majority of the populace will never consider, and this is that film.

What also will drive a nail in the idea of a wide release is that the film is not English-dubbed. Foreign films with English subtitles are often never given major consideration due to alot of people going that they 'do not want to read movies.'

I still think refusing to read subtitles is a sign of laziness. XD We Finns are so used to subs that wanting everything dubbed just seems weird to us.

At least the US doesn't do the same thing Poland does. My friend and I watched a movie while in Poland in 2006, and ALL ROLES were dubbed by the same monotonous narrator just speaking over the original voices. He even did the kids and women. In that same flat monotone.

There is already one finnish movie known around the world. Its called Star Wrek. I myself don't care about that movie at all it just felt like really stupid joke movie still it has a lot of fans around the world. I'm still eagerly waiting their newest project called Iron Sky as it will its own movie and not satire of other scifi programs. It also has nazis. :P

What about Leningrad Cowboys Go America? Didn't that have some success internationally?

reply

Modest success. The Man Without a Past has made almost 5 times of what Rare Exports has. RE cannot beat that.

You mean the original Swedish version, "Let the Right One In"? Yes, it was very big but it's not Finnish..

I'm American, and after watching this, I hope more Finnish films, especially comedies, make their way to our markets. I loved this!
